BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Jeff Novak (Killingworth, Conn.), freshman Mark Pappas (Worcester, Mass.), and freshman Mike Sharpe (Needham, Mass.) each tallied three goals as the Wentworth lacrosse team held Regis scoreless over the final 35:35, en route to a 20-3 win in the regular-season finale played at Sweeney Field.
The visiting Pride tallied first on a goal from freshman Andrew Haddon (Nantucket, Mass.) with 9:53 left in the first quarter. Wentworth would score just nine seconds later when Sharpe scored his first of the game, which was followed by a goal from senior Jeff Ryan (East Lyme, Conn.) and a second goal from Sharpe. Regis freshman Bradford Hastings (Mansfield, Mass.) made it a 3-2 game with 1:43 remaining in the quarter before Pappas tallied a shorthanded marker with 54 ticks left to close out the scoring for the period.
Using a 6-1 second quarter, the hosts broke the game open. Novak scored all three of his goals during this span, while junior midfielder Nick Pepe (North Reading, Mass.) added two, and Pappas had a single goal. Regis' only marker was scored by freshman Michael Kaplan (Braintree, Mass.).
Freshman Justin Connors, Ryan, Pappas, and junior Matt Cox (Granger, Ind.) each scored for the Leopards in the third quarter, while Cox, Sharpe, junior Lucas Littlefield (Narragansett, R.I.) freshman Sean Paradis (Pelham, N.H.), sophomore Patrick Helfrich (North Andover, Mass.), and sophomore Zach Kovacs (Tiverton, R.I.) scored in the final quarter.
Connors, Cox, and Sharpe each had two assists on the game, while Ryan collected 14 ground balls. Sophomore Mike Swenson (East Lyme, Conn.) was 14 of 19 in the faceoff X, a stat which the Leopards dominated, 19-8.
Senior Sean Tobin (Silver Spring, Md.) made three saves over the first 30:00, while freshmen Jared Proulx (Nashua, N.H.) and Alex Matses (North Andover, Mass.) made one and two saves, respectively, in 15:00 of work each. Regis sophomore Andrew LaMacchia (Lynn, Mass.) made 28 saves to take the loss. Wentworth held a 76-21 advantage in shots and a 77-38 advantage in ground balls.
The win snaps a five-game losing streak for Wentworth, which improves to 5-9. The Leopards are involved in a three-way tie for the eighth and final spot in The Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament, and that spot will be determined on Monday. Regis falls to 0-9 and hosts Daniel Webster on Tuesday.
