Roger Williams Downs Wentworth, 17-4

Roger Williams Downs Wentworth, 17-4

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior attacker Drew Smith (Blue Point, N.Y.) scored six goals and added a pair of assists as the Roger Williams men's lacrosse team raced out to a 7-2 lead after one quarter of play and never looked back, downing Wentworth, 17-4, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played at Sweeney Field.

With 12:20 left in the quarter, Smith notched his first marker to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead, but 40 seconds later Leopard senior attacker Jeff Novak (Killingworth, Conn.) evened the score at 1-all.  Smith scored to put the Hawks ahead with 11:31 left and just 10 seconds later assisted on freshman attacker Jackson Siefert's (Duxbury, Mass.) goal that made it a 3-1 game.  Wentworth would eventually cut the lead to 4-1 on freshman attacker Mark Pappas' (Worcester, Mass.) 25th tally of the season, but three Hawks' goals, including two from junior midfielder Logan Roebuck (Montgomery, N.Y.) gave RWU a 7-2 lead.

The Hawks scored three straight to open the second quarter, extending their lead to 10-2 before Novak notched his second marker of the game with 4:50 left in the half and made it a 10-3 game at the break.

Wentworth was limited to just one goal over the final 30 minutes and that came with 4:32 left in the third quarter when freshman goalie Jared Proulx (Nashua, N.H.) cleared the ball himself and went in for the score.  That goal came after Roebuck and Smith had each scored and before Smith scored his final two goals of the game.

Roebuck finished with three goals and an assist, while freshman attacker Ian Powers (Shrewsbury, Mass.) added three goals for the Hawks.  Novak was the only multiple point scorer for Wentworth with his two goals.

Junior Tyler Roebuck (West Islip, N.Y.) made six saves in 45:00 of work before junior Tom Hardon (Devon, Pa.) stopped all four shots he faced in the fourth quarter.  Wentworth senior Sean Tobin (Silver Spring, Md.) allowed nine goals and made four saves in 21:38 of work.  Proulx made seven saves and allowed eight goals in just over 30:00 of action before freshman Alex Matses (North Andover, Mass.) played the final 8:17 without facing a shot on goal.

With the win the Hawks run their win streak to three and improve to 4-6 overall and 4-3 in TCCC play.  Roger Williams is at Anna Maria on Tuesday afternoon.  Wentworth drops its second straight to fall to 4-6 overall (2-5 TCCC) and is at Endicott Tuesday night.
