Softball Splits with Endicott in Pair of Conference Classics

BOSTON, Mass. – In a pair of neck-and-neck battles, the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team fell in an extra frame to the Endicott Gulls in the first game (4-3) before the Leopards fended off the Gulls in a thrilling game two win (3-2).

The Leopards' win in game two marked the program's first-ever win over the Gulls. With the split, Wentworth moves to 11-11 (1-1 CCC) while Endicott holds a 10-3 (3-1 CCC) record.

GAME ONE: ENDICOTT 4, WENTWORTH 3 (FINAL – 8 INNINGS)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • With two runners on base, a single by junior Caitlyn Romero (Southport, Conn.) ran home one, giving the Gulls a 1-0 edge. The visitors doubled their lead in the third inning on a solo home run by graduate student Katie Watts (Swampscott, Mass.).
  • Wentworth cut the deficit to one run in the third inning as a double by freshman Brianna Miller (West Haven, Conn.) drove home a score, marking a 2-1 game before later in the third, a single by freshman Kesley Medalia (Tacoma, Wash.) brought home Miller, knotting the game at two-all.
  • A sacrifice fly later in the frame ran home a score by junior Katelin Howe (Bow, N.H.), giving the Leopards a 3-2 advantage. However, after battling in the middle innings, the Gulls knotted the score at three aside in the sixth inning as junior Dani Lear (Groveland, Mass.) singled to bring home one runner and advance another to second.
  • Endicott took a 4-3 lead in the eighth inning as junior Paige Berdos (Plainville, Mass.) tripled with a runner in scoring position. The Gulls fended off the Leopards with three ground outs in the bottom of the frame.
  • Miller led the offensive attack with two hits while sophomore Julie Schriver (Moscow, Pa.) struck out nine in the circle.

GAME TWO: WENTWORTH 3, ENDICOTT 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth gained an initial lead in the second inning as a fielder's choice with two runners on, leading to a score by junior Jess Rowe (Yardley, Pa.). A single by Miller later in the inning drove home another run, extending the lead to 2-0.
  • Romero sacrifice flied in the third inning, leading to a score by Watts to cut the Gulls' deficit to 2-1. In the fourth inning, a single by sophomore Julianna Roche (North Andover, Mass.) with a runner in scoring position drove home a score, tying the game at two aside.
  • The Leopards regained their lead to in the fourth inning as a single by Howe with two runners on base drove one home, giving the hosts a 4-3 edge. The Black & Gold fended off the Gulls' dangerous attack, including a strikeout and pop-up catch by Rowe in the seventh inning, to hold on for a thrilling 3-2 win.
  • Rowe led the offense with two hits while she earned her fourth win in the circle with four strikeouts and four hits surrendered.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Today marked the 44th and 45th all-time meetings between the two team while Wentworth's triumph in game two marked the first-ever win over the Gulls in the program's history.
