LEESBURG, Fla. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team fell short in both their outings Friday, with their comeback bid against Rivier falling short (4-3) before dropping their eighth contest of the season to Adrian, 10-2.
GAME ONE: RIVIER 4, WENTWORTH 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the first inning, despite a groundout for junior Katie Kranz (Bedford, Mass.), graduate student Kaitlin Pettenger (Budd Lake, N.J.) ran home for the Leopards to give them a 1-0 edge early.
- An error for Wentworth with two runners on brought home a score for the Raiders in the second inning before a sacrifice fly ran a run home by sophomore Hayley Rapaglia (Methuen, Mass.), giving Rivier a 2-1 lead.
- In the third inning, a single by Rapaglia with two runners in scoring position drove home one run, extending their lead to 3-1.
- Wentworth cut the deficit to just one in the fourth inning as a groundout by junior Katelin Howe (Bow, N.H.) with the bases loaded drove home a score.
- Rivier cushioned their lead to two in the fifth inning as a triple by Rapaglia drove home a runner, marking a 4-2 score.
- The Leopards tried the claw back in the seventh, as a single by junior Jess Rowe (Yardley, Pa.) with two runners on base drove home a score. However, a groundout on the next at-bat ended the comeback bid.
- Rowe and sophomore Kyla Igawa (Long Beach, Calif.) registered two hits for Wentworth while sophomore Julie Schriver (Moscow, Pa.) struck out one batter across five innings of work.
GAME TWO: ADRIAN 10, WENTWORTH 2 (FINAL – 5 INNINGS)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth took an initial 2-0 lead in first inning as hits with runners on base by Rowe and freshman Abigail Delia (Litchfield, N.H.) ran home one score apiece, respectively.
- Adrian knotted the score at two aside in the back half of the inning, as a single by junior Maggie Leveille (Clinton Twp, Mich.) drove home a run before the Bulldogs capitalized on a sacrifice fly.
- A double by Leveille in the second inning helped push Adrian's advantage to 5-2 before another double by the junior in the fifth inning extended the lead to 6-2. Three walks with runners on base stretched the Bulldogs' lead to 10-2 later in the inning.
- Rowe led Wentworth's effort in the circle while graduate student Kaitlin Pettenger (Budd Lake, N.J.) led the offense with two hits.
