Endicott Takes Two From Baseball

BEVERLY, Mass. – Senior Harry Orringer (Dartmouth, Mass.) went 3-for-6 with a home run and five RBI in two games while senior Zac Poland (Essex Junction, Vt.) spun a six-hit shutout in the nightcap as the Endicott College baseball team swept Wentworth Institute of Technology in a pair of Commonwealth Coast Conference contests played at North Field. Endicott took the first game in eight inning, 5-2, and won the second game, 9-0.

With the wins the Gulls improve to 10-7 overall and 6-0 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 9-7 (2-2).

As the home team on the scoreboard, Wentworth took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one when senior Joe Hulme (Tewksbury, Mass.) laces a one-out triple down the right field line and came in to score when classmate Jake Mailman (Medway, Mass.) grounded out. An inning later the Leopards took a 2-0 lead when senior Scott Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine) hit a one-out infield single and went to third with two outs on a failed pickoff attempt. He would score on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Jimmy Temte (Northborough, Mass.).

Endicott tied the game in the top of the fourth as junior Matthew Paola (Middlebury, Conn.) hit a two-run single up the middle and scored when classmate Anthony Serina (Portsmouth, R.I.) homered to left field.

Both teams had a runner on in the seventh inning, however were unable to break the deadlock.

In the top of the eighth inning sophomore Cam Farnham (Andover, Mass.) led off with a single and went to second when freshman Michael DeDonato (Chelmsford, Mass.) walked. Farnham stole third and DeDonato swiped second, which set the stage for Orringer to hit a two-run double down the left field line. After Orrigner moved to third on a fly ball, he was thrown out at home when Paola hit into a fielder's choice. Paola would score on a Serina double.

Senior Anthony Matera led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and went to second when Hulme drew a one-out walk. Both runners moved up 90 feet on a Mailman groundout, however junior reliever Nick Quattro (Canton, Conn.) would end Wentworth's hope of a comeback with a strikeout to end the game.

Quattro improved to 3-0 as he allowed one hit and one walk while striking out three in 1.1 innings of work. Starter JJ Branch (Milford, Mass.) went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits, walked two and struck out five. Serina had three of the Gulls' eight hits and drove in three runs while Orringer drove in two.

Sophomore Aaron Denis (Dover, N.H.) absorbed his first loss (3-1) of the season as he pitched a complete game, allowing five runs on eight hits, walked three, and struck out three. Six different players had hits for Wentworth.

After a scoreless first inning, Endicott got all the runs it would need in the top of the second, with three coming on an Orringer home run. Farnham had an RBI infield single and Paola would score on a DeDonato sacrifice fly before Orrigner delivered his two-out home run.

Endicott added a single run in the fifth inning when junior Cody Hall (Rutland, Mass.) drove in junior Nicholas De Lotto (Southbury, Conn.), who had a two-out single.

The Gulls plated three more in the sixth with sophomore Mike Kochiss (Fairfield, Conn.) driving in a pair of runs with a single and Serina driving in a run with a groundout.

Poland struck out a pair of batters as he improved to 2-2 on the season. Farnham and De Lotto had three hits each, while Orrigner had two hits and three RBI.

Mailman had two of Wentworth's six hits. Freshman Robby Sheldon (Dover, N.H.) picked up his first loss (3-1) as he allowed nine runs on 12 hits in 5.1 innings. Senior Dakota Baird (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing an inherited runner to score, while sophomore Zack Bernier (North Dartmouth, Mass.) pitched a scoreless seventh, allowing one hit.

Wentworth is at Mass. Maritime on Thursday.
