Castleton Skates Past Hockey in Home Opener

EVERETT, Mass. – Seven different players found the back of the net and senior Ryan Smith (Whitehorse, Yukon) added three assists as the Castleton University ice hockey team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 7-2, in a non-league contest played at Allied Veterans Rink.

The Spartans opened their season with a win while the Leopards fall to 0-2.

Castleton scored twice in a span of 2:50 to take a 2-0 lead in the first period. Sophomore Troy Taylor (Mississauga, Ont.) scored a power-play goal at 6:09 while freshman Glen Wiswell (Berwick, Maine) tallied at 8:59. Smith picked up helpers on both goals. The Spartans increased their lead to 3-0 win a goal from senior Ryan O'Malley (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) at the 16:09 mark of the opening period.

Just 42 seconds into the middle stanza, sophomore Georgy Gorodetskii (Yekaterinburg, Russia) picked up his first collegiate goal off a feed from senior Jake McDonough. Castleton countered with two goals in a span of 2:01 to increase its lead to 5-1 as senior Kurt Johnson (Wallingford, Conn.) and junior Caleb Frazier (Sarasota, Fla.) each scored goals. Frazier had assisted on Johnson 's marker. With 23 seconds left in the frame, sophomore Otis Goodman (Vancouver, B.C.) made it a 6-1 game with a goal from Smith.

The teams traded goals in the third period. Castleton increased the lead to 7-1 on a sophomore Mark Shroyer (Fresno, Calif.) goal at 8:46, and, with 1:17 remaining, junior Angus Johnston (Calgary, Alta.) scored from Gorodetskii and junior Adam Lane (Sarnia, Ont.).

Senior Ryan Mulder (Ottawa, Ont.) made 31 saves for the Spartans. Senior Ryan Hubbard (West Roxbury, Mass.) made 16 saves in 28:38 for the Leopards while sophomore Kenny Graham (Milton, Mass.) turned aside 18 shots in 31:14. Castleton had a 41-33 shot advantage.

Wentworth opens Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Thursday night at home against Endicott.
