Hockey Nets Two in Second Period to Edge Suffolk

EVERETT, Mass. – Sophomore Georgy Gorodetskii's (Yekaterinburg, Russia) goal midway through the second period snapped a 1-all tie as the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team fended off Suffolk, 2-1, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played at Allied Veteran's Rink.

With the win the Leopards run their unbeaten streak to four (2-0-2) and improve to 4-6-3 overall and even their record at 3-3-3 in league play. The Rams slip to 5-6-1 (2-6-1) after suffering the setback. The one-goal margin marked the fourth series meeting and the seventh in the last nine games between the two schools where the outcome was a single goal.

Suffolk jumped on the board first on a goal at 6:27 of the opening period as junior Mikhail Bryan (Dayton, Ohio) scored, just 22 seconds after the Rams had killed off a major penalty. Freshman Matt Bucher (Cromwell, Conn.) sent a pass to sophomore Brian Brooks (Canton, Mass.), who found Bryan on the odd-man rush. Shots were 15-14 in favor of Wentworth in the period with 13 of those shots coming on a pair of power plays.

Wentworth got the equalizer at the 4:14 mark of the second period as senior Jake McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.) put a shot inside the left post off of passes from sophomore Connor Beaudet (Buffalo, N.Y.) and junior Angus Johnston (Calgary, Alta.). Gorodetskii worked the puck along the left side where he dumped a pass to junior Adam Lane (Sarnia, Ont.) behind the net. Lane slid a pass to sophomore Adam Tracey (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) who found Gorodetskii along the right side for what would be the game-winning goal.

Both teams had chances in the third period and the Rams pulled junior Michael Levine (Clarendon Hill, Ill.) with 1:13 remaining for an extra attacker. Suffolk put a shot on goal which was saved by sophomore Kenny Graham (Milton, Mass.), however was unable to get the equalizer.

Graham made 32 saves in the game while Levine turned aside 33. Wentworth had a 35-33 shot advantage in the game.

The two teams wrap up their home-and-home series tomorrow night at the Emmons Horrigan O'Neil rink in Charlestown. Faceoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
