Men's Tennis Suffers First Spring Loss

DUDLEY, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the spring season as the Leopards were defeated by Nichols, 7-2, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match at Robinson Courts.

With the win the Bison improve to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in CCC play while the Leopards sit at 2-2 (1-1).

Sophomores Igor Markowski (Paris, France) and Kirill Ivanov (Moscow, Russia) scored an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles to get the day started for Nichols against Wentworth junior Seng Ly (Lynn, Mass.) and senior Zach Peter (Preston, Conn.).

The Leopards clawed right back with a win at No. 3 doubles, 8-4, to even the score. Senior Thinh Dang (Boston, Mass.) and freshman Alex Mularski (Auburn, Mass.) defeated seniors Dan Roberts (South Windsor, Conn.) and Dan Sullivan (Burlington, Mass.).

Nichols the lead right back as sophomore Blake Norton (Stratford, Conn.) and freshman Brandon Howard (Hamden, Conn.) took down senior Matthew Smith (Pelham, N.H.) and junior Jeff Tocco (Plymouth, Mass.), 8-4 and carried a 2-1 lead into singles play.

Markowski won at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0 over Peter. Senior Jake Zapatka (Wethersfield, Conn.) followed that up with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles over Ly.

Norton defeated Smith in the top flight by an identical score to Zapatka's before Howard defeated Tocco at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-2.

Dang picked up the Leopards second point of the day winning No. 5 singles over Sullivan. After dropping the first set, he rallied back to take the final two sets 4-6, 6-2, 10-8.

Freshman Chris Chardron (Franconia, N.H.) won in similar fashion at No. 6 singles to close out the day. After dropping the first set to Mularski, Chardron came back to win it 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.

Wentworth hosts Roger Williams Saturday at Regis College.
