Robbins Win in 3,000-Meter Run Highlights Indoor Track at Tufts

EVERETT, Mass. – Senior Alex Robbins (Mansfield, Mass.) took first in the 3,000-meter run and classmate Dan McSolla (Bridgewater, Mass.) was second in the 800-meter run as the Wentworth Institute of Technology indoor track team competed at the Tufts Invitational.

Freshman Marina Schmid (Mendon, Mass.) placed 14th in the preliminaries of the women's 60-meter hurdles, with a time of 10.91, which was 0.68 seconds below the cutoff for qualifying for the finals. She also placed 18th in the long jump (4.44 meters (14 feet, seven inches), and was 34th in the 200-meter dash (30.83).

The men's 60-meter dash saw senior Jake Skurja (Stratford, Conn.) just miss qualifying for the finals with a personal best of 7.26. The cutoff was 7.25 which gave him a ninth-place finish. Sophomore Dan Padula (Hanover, mass.) placed 29th with a time of 7.53, narrowly missing his personal best.

Robbins bested the 31-runner field in the 3,000 with a personal-best time of 8:52.60, which was 1.3 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Senior Patrick Hopkins (Lansdale, Pa.) was third in the race with a time of 9:01.24, followed by a fifth-place finish from junior Josh Gangemi (Norton, Mass.) who recorded a personal-best time of 9:08.72.

Four Leopards competed in the mile as freshman Anthony Maida (Peabody, Mass.) finished 19th with a time of 5:06.73. Finishing right behind him with a time of 5:09.29 was freshman Wes Brimeyer (Dubuque, Iowa). Sophomore Nathan Ouellette (Wells, Maine) was 21st (5:13.01) while freshman Rob Moran (Billerica, Mass.) placed 23rd (5:15.50). Maida, Brimeyer, and Ouellette all recorded personal bests.

Skurja finished fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.05, followed by a 24th place finish from freshman Alexis Umana (Revere, Mass.) who crossed the line in a time of 57.48 and a 32nd place finish (1:03.61) from freshman Abderrahman Boukaa (Casablanca, Morocco).

McSolla finished 1.23 seconds behind the first-place finisher in the 800-meter run, crossing the line with a time of 1:56.68. Junior Chris Kaberle (Pelham, N.H.) was eighth with a time of 2:10.33, while freshman Will Allen (West Hartford, Conn.) finished 13th with a time of 2:12.27.

Freshman Tyler Cosma (Center Moriches, N.Y.) was 16th in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:50.75, while Padula's time of 24.52 placed him 27th in the 200-meter dash. Padula also finished 20th in the long jump with a best jump of 5.85 meters (19 feet, 2.50 inches).

Freshman Nick Massauro (Ashland, Mass.) was 28th in the shot put with a personal best throw of 10.34 meters (33 feet, 11 inches) while sophomore Zachary Shelton (North Attleboro, Mass.) also had a personal best with a throw of 9.35 meters (30 feet, eight inches), which placed him 30th.

Wentworth will be back at Tufts on January 27 for the Branwen Smith King Tufts Stampede.
