Indoor Track and Field Shatters Records at David Hemery Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth indoor track and field team had a strong performance all around in the annual David Hemery Invitational hosted on the campus of Boston University on Saturday.

Jake Skurja (Stratford, Conn.) continued his solid senior campaign, setting a new personal best in the 400m dash with a time of 49.18. Skurja set his 400m PR shortly after his 60m race, where he placed third with a time of 7.22, just .11 short of his best mark.

Joining Skurja on the sprinters side was freshman Abderrahman Boukaa (Casablanca, Morocco) and sophomores Dan Padula (Hanover, Mass.) and Luke Trickey (Westbrook, Maine), who each ran their fastest 200m race this season. Padula and Boukaa set a new personal best, finishing at 23.49 and 24.75, respectively, while Trickey clocked in at 24.60.

The Leopards entered seven runners in the mile run, all of whom ran a season-best. Senior Dan McSolla (Bridgewater, Mass.) ran a season-best time of 4.11.70, placing sixth in his heat to lead the Leopards. Junior Josh Gangemi (Norton, Mass.) clocked in at 4:30.46, leading the following five Leopards with a new personal record. Freshman Will Allen (West Hartford, Conn.) finished at 4:38.93, followed by freshman Tyler Cosma (Center Moriches, N.Y.) at 4:49.55. Freshman Wes Brimeyer (Dubuque, Iowa) broke 5:00 for the first time this season, setting a new personal best of 4:50.57, while junior Nathan Ouellette (Wells, Maine) and freshman Anthony Maida (Peabody, Mass.) rounded out the mile run for the Leopards, each with a PR.

Freshman Alexis Umana (Revere, Mass.) and junior Chris Kaberle (Pelham, N.H.) represented Wentworth in the 500m and 800m race, and clocked in at 1:12.23 and 2:10.36, respectively.

Seniors Alex Robbins (Mansfield, Mass.) and Patrick Hopkins (Lansdale, Pa.) concluded the meet with record-breaking performances in the 3000m run. Robbins was first to run the event for the Leopards, and shattered the school record of 8:44.33, previously set by Hopkins. Robbins finished at 8:39.98, for a new PR, good for fifth place in his heat. Hopkins then took the track for his heat, and snatched the record right back with a blistering time of 8:37.63.

Wentworth is back in action on Saturday, February 17 for the New England Division III Championships hosted by Middlebury College.
