BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) of the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team, has been named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District® Women's Volleyball Team. With her selection, Curran becomes the 20th Leopard student-athlete and first women's volleyball player to earn Academic All-District honors.
The 2013 Capital One Academic All-District® Women's Volleyball Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, have been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America teams programs since 2011.
Curran was a key reason why Wentworth had its most successful season in program history, posting a 16-11 record which broke the single-season mark for wins during her freshman season. She played in all 27 of the Leopards' matches and 94 of a possible 96 sets, recording a program-record 404 digs (4.30 per set) to go along with 51 service aces (0.54 per set), which ranked her second among her teammates. Among Commonwealth Coast Conference student-athletes, she is third in digs per set, fourth in total digs, seventh in service aces per set, and 10th in service aces.
A three-year starter at libero, Curran has played in 78 matches and 278 sets and is the program's all-time leader with 3.58 digs per set and second with 987 digs, while her 113 service aces and 0.41 service aces per set both rank her 11th on Wentworth's all-time list. A Biomedical Engineering major, Curran is also the starting shortstop on the Leopard softball team.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
The Academic All-District® teams include student-athletes divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the third year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
