Balanced Attack Lifts Women's Volleyball to Fourth Straight Win

DUDLEY, Mass. – Junior Abigail Ahern (Barrington, N.H.) led a balanced attack with six kills and six digs as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory over Nichols in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Wednesday night.

Winners of four straight the Leopards improve 17-2 overall and 3-1 in CCC play while the Bison fall to 2-18 (0-4).

Wentworth scored five of the first six points in the opening set and never looked back as the Leopards rolled to a 25-7 win. During one stretch of the set sophomore Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) served seven straight Leopard points and classmate Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, Calif.) served a pair of aces. Wentworth forced Nichols to hit -.077 in the frame.

Nichols took a 3-2 lead in the second set before the Leopards answered with an 8-3 run, capped off by a senior Jordan Young (Derry, N.H.) kill. The Bison scored two of the next three points to make it 11-8, however, Wentworth broke the set open with an 8-2 run and led 19-10 after a sophomore Maddy Tomastik (Portland, Ore.) ace. Wentworth took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-17 win.

The Leopards hit a match-high .312 in the third set while forcing Nichols to have a negative attack percentage (-.031) for the second time in the match in a 25-13 win. Trailing 3-1, Wentworth rolled off six straight points, thanks in part to a pair of aces from junior Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.). The Black & Gold extended their lead to 15-8 on a kill from senior Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, Conn.) and used a 6-0 run later in the set to take their largest lead (23-10).

Senior Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) had five kills on 13 swings without making an error while Carlson and Young had four kills apiece. Clark served four aces and had 15 digs, sophomore Lexie Cambray (Bedford, N.H.) had two aces and 11 digs, Tomastik had 15 assists, and freshman Kayla Chen (Irvine, Calif.) chipped in with 10 helpers.

Wentworth hosts a tri-match against Rhode Island College and Mass. Maritime on Saturday.
