CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to snap a 3-all tie and spoiled Wentworth's northern opener as the Engineers defeated the Leopards, 9-3, in a non-conference contest at Briggs Field.

Wentworth grabbed two runs in the first inning off of MIT starter Kiel Jindra, who struck out five batters in two frames of work. A fielding error by and a walk by Jindra put two men on base and Wentworth's designated hitter Jake McManus (Hopkinton, N.H.) brought them home with a ringing single up the middle.

The teams traded runs in the bottom of the third and top of the fifth innings but MIT was able to tie the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth before busting it open in the seventh inning by putting a six spot on the board. After singling to start the seventh, Dayton scored on a wild pitch and an error. Later in the inning, catcher Dan Hyatt singled home Doyle before McKinney hit a single that scored Hyatt and second baseman Jonathan Rea. Zach Carr finished the inning by doubling home first baseman Ricardo Perez, who had reached on an error, before Carr was thrown out trying to make it to third on the play.

MIT outhit the Leopards nine to five. Ben Lewis (Middletown, R.I.) took the loss for Wentworth, giving up four runs in an inning and two-thirds. Lewis came on in relief of the starter Nick Colanto (Beverly, Mass.) who gave up three runs in five innings and struck out five Engineers. Second baseman Jon Spitz (Hanover, Mass.) had two of Wentworth's five hits.

Eight different batters scored runs for MIT, with Dayton the only Engineer to cross the plate twice. Dayton was also one of two MIT players to have two hits in the game, along with Doyle.

It was a bullpen day for the MIT pitchers, as seven pitchers took the mound, pitching no more than two innings. Cameron Browne pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh inning to pick up the win, his first decision of the season.

MIT (3-1) will leave tomorrow for their spring trip to Winter Haven, Florida, a trip that will begin with a three-game New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference series against the Wheaton Lyons over the weekend. Wentworth drops to 5-5 on the season and will play on Saturday at Johnson and Wales.
