Baseball Advances in TCCC Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Junior left-hander Adam Farrar (Newport, VT) tossed eight shutout innings and senior second baseman Jake McManus (Hopkinton, NH) knocked in three runs as fourth-seeded Wentworth posted a 7-1 victory over top-seeded Western New England in a winners' bracket game of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Baseball Tournament Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Bears, ranked 25th nationally in the latest NCBWA/D3Baseball.com Poll and fourth in the NCAA Division III New England rankings, will host fifth-seeded Salve Regina (who beat eighth-seeded Colby-Sawyer 3-2 (10 innings) today) at 3:00 p.m. Friday (May 6) with the winner advancing to meet Wentworth on Saturday (May 7) in the double elimination event.

Farrar had his best outing of the season, giving up just four hit with two walks and five strikeouts in raising his record to 4-3. Junior Kyle Cruz (Burlington, CT) pitched the ninth inning, allowing a run on two hits and striking out two batters.

The Leopards (23-14) scored three runs in the third on a RBI single by junior shortstop Conner Flisnik (Marcy, NY) and added two more on a two-run single by McManus.

Western New England (33-9) had a runner in scoring position in the third and two on in the fourth, but couldn't score.

Wentworth added four runs in the seventh with a two-run double by sophomore catcher Ryan Delgado (Wareham, MA) providing the big hit, while senior first baseman Ben Danker (Branford, CT) and McManus each drove in runs.

Delgado finished with two hits as did Flisnik who also scored twice. Freshman left fielder Jon Spitz (Hanover, MA) singled, walked, and scored two runs.

The Golden Bears committed a season high five errors, which led to four unearned runs.

Western New England scored its only run in the ninth when freshman Vince Allocco (Whippany, NY) led-off with a pinch-hit single, moved to second when freshman pinch-hitter Taylor Searles (Seymour, CT) was hit by a pitch, and came home on a two-out double by sophomore second baseman Tim Clark (West Springfield, MA).

Senior center-fielder Andrew Fatse (Hampden, MA) had two of the team's six hits in moving his hit streak to six contests. senior Zach Cloft (Glastonbury, CT) allowed  six hits and six runs (three earned) in six innings. He walked two and fanned a career high nine in dropping to 7-2.
