SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Student-athletes from 10 different institutions in The Commonwealth Coast Conference were represented on the 2011 All-TCCC Baseball Team, it was announced today by Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye. In addition to the all-conference team, winners of five major individual awards and the team sportsmanship award were also selected.
Four members of the 2011 Leopard baseball squad earned all-conference honors as sophomore catcher Ryan Delgado (Wareham, Mass.), senior first baseman Ben Danker (Branford, Conn.), junior shortstop Conner Flisnik (Marcy, N.Y.), and freshman outfielder Jon Spitz (Hanover, Mass.) were all Honorable Mention All-TCCC selections. Voting for the All-TCCC team and each of the major awards was conducted among TCCC baseball coaches.
Delgado started 21 of the team's 22 conference games, hitting .322 (19-for-59) with three doubles, 14 runs scored, and eight RBI. Overall he has started 31 of the 33 contests in which he has played, batting .385 (35-for-91 with four doubles, 24 runs scored, and 14 RBI. In those 33 games he has an on-base percentage of .462 and a slugging percentage of .429. Defensively he has thrown out nearly 30 percent of baserunners trying to steal on him. In 61 career games Delgado is batting .314 (49-for-156) with seven doubles, 36 runs scored, and 25 RBI.
The team's hottest hitter over the last week (10-for-20), Danker started 21 of Wentworth's 22 conference games, batting .367 (22-for-60) with three doubles, a home run, 12 runs scored, and 16 RBI. Defensively he made just one error in 152 total chances for a .993 fielding percentage. Starting 31 games overall, he presently leads the team with a .394 (37-for-94) batting average with seven doubles, one home run, 16 runs scored, and 21 RBI. He has a slugging percentage of .500, an on-base percentage of .453, and a .996 fielding percentage. He is tied for the team lead with 12 multiple-hit games. In 141 career games (138 starts), Danker has hit .314 (143-for-456) with 31 doubles, three triples, three home runs, 91 runs scored, and 84 RBI. His career .991 fielding percentage ranks him second in program history, as do his hits and doubles.
A mainstay at shortstop for three seasons, Flisnik hit .328 (21-for-64) with two doubles and a triple to go along with 12 runs scored and 11 RBI while starting in 20 of the 20 league games in which he played. Overall he is batting .321 (35-for-109) with five doubles, one triple, 18 runs scored and 17 RBI in 32 games for the Black & Gold. He is tied with Danker for the team lead with 12 multiple-hit games and also is tied for the team lead with four sacrifice bunts and two sacrifice flies. Flisnik, who set the program's single-season hit record a season ago with 56, has started all 117 games in which he has played in during his career, batting .327 (129-for-395) with 20 doubles, four triples, and three home runs. He is the program's all-time leader with 20 sacrifice hits, while recording the fourth highest career batting average.
Spitz has enjoyed a solid rookie campaign for the Leopards, starting 16 of 17 conference games and batting .352 (19-for-54) with three doubles, a triple, nine runs scored, and nine RBI while seeing time primarily in the outfield, as well as at shortstop. In 26 of Wentworth's contests (20 starts), he is batting .353 (24-for-68) with four doubles, one triple, four stolen bases, 17 runs scored, and 10 RBI. Additionally, he is tied for second on the team with two sacrifice hits.
Wentworth sits at 23-13 after finishing fourth in TCCC play with a 14-8 record. The Leopards defeated Salve Regina, 3-1, in the opening round of TCCC Tournament on Tuesday and will travel to top-seeded and 25th-ranked Western New England for a second round game on Thursday.
