BEVERLY, Mass. – Sophomore Owen Swanson (New Milford, Conn.) and senior Tyler Weninger (Chandler, Ariz.) each had a pair of hits in the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team's doubleheader loss to Endicott Saturday afternoon. The Gulls won game one, 3-0, and took the nightcap, 9-5.

GAME ONE:  Endicott 3, Wentworth 0
Swanson led off the game being hit by a pitch and he became Wentworth's lone baserunner of the game until he had a two-out single in the sixth inning, which broke up a no-hit bid. After he was hit by a pitch in the opening frame, he went worth second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Aidan French (Chicago, Ill.) and moved to third on a Weninger groundout. However, he was stranded there when a strikeout ended the inning.

Endicott scored single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to account for the scoring. In the fourth inning, sophomore Brendan McDonald (Quincy, Mass.) hit a one-out triple and scored on a sophomore Ian Schmidt (Plymouth, Conn.) single. The fifth inning saw freshman Matthew McKinley (Hudson, N.H.) lead off with a walk and eventually come around to score when senior Brad Rebello (Bellingham, Mass.) reached on an error.

The Leopards nearly got on the board in the sixth inning. After Swanson broke up the no-hit bid, he went to second when French singled and both runners moved up when Weninger was hit by a pitch. However, junior Will Bryant (Cumberland, Maine) came in and got a ground out to end the threat.

Senior Will Ferreira (Nantucket, Mass.) improved to 3-1 on the season as he allowed no runs on two hits and struck out five in 5.2 innings. Bryant picked up the save, his six, as he retired all four batters he faced. McDonald, Schmidt, and freshman Jacob Thibault (Methuen, Mass.) each had a pair of hits for the Gulls.

Sophomore Ryan Obin (Plymouth, Mass.) took the loss (1-3) as he allowed three runs on eight hits in the complete-game effort.

GAME TWO:  Endicott 9, Wentworth 5
French drew a one-out walk in the first inning and scored on a Weninger double. On the throw home, Weninger took third and scored a batter later on an RBI single from senior Tim Elrick (Plymouth, Mass.). Junior Andrew Elliott (Rockland, Mass.) doubled in Elrick to stake the Leopards to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

A seven-run third inning gave the Gulls a 7-3 advantage, highlighted by a pair of two-run home runs. Rebello led off with a walk and scored on senior Michael DeDonato's (Chelmsford, Mass.) home run. Senior Michael Casciano (Somers, Conn.) followed with a triple and scored when McDonald reached on an error. McDonald came around to score on a two-run home run from freshman Nickolas Perkins (Nashua, N.H.). McKinley would add an RBI double and junior Dan Cacciola (Saugus, Mass.) drove in a run with a fielder's choice.

Wentworth pulled within a pair in the fifth inning as the Leopards scored twice with two outs on a Weninger triple. Freshman Cole Fritz (Peoria, Ariz.) struck out, however, went to first on a wild pitch. Swanson hit into a fielder's choice which erased Fritz and he went to second on a walk from French. Weninger plated them both with his third three-bagger of the season, however, was stranded there when a strikeout ended the inning.

Endicott added two runs in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to an RBI single from freshman Kyle Brennan (Wallingford, Conn.) and an RBI on a fielder's choice from Thibault.

Sophomore Joseph Oriola (Pembroke, Mass.) picked up the win (2-1) as he allowed five runs on four hits and struck out six in 4.2 innings of work. Sophomore Alexander Mandrus (Acton, Mass.) notched his first save of the season as he yielded one hit and struck out four in 2.1 innings of work. DeDonato had three hits and drove in two runs for the Gulls.

Junior Mike Callagee (Emerson, N.J.) took the loss (1-2) as he allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits in two-plus innings of work. Weninger pitched three innings, allowing three unearned runs on six hits, while freshman Nate McDonald (Durham, Conn.) pitched a scoreless sixth. Weninger also had two hits and drove in three runs.

Wentworth hosts Salve Regina on Sunday.
