BOSTON, Mass. – Junior guard Rob Harrigan (Stamford, Conn.) recorded a game-high 10 points as the Connecticut College men's basketball team used an 11-0 run late in the game to defeat Wentworth, 53-43, in a non-conference contest played at Tansey Gymnasium.
The Camels held an early, 7-4 lead with five of those points coming from senior guard Brian Mahoney (Quincy, Mass.) before the Leopards used a 9-0 run to take a 13-7 lead on back-to-back baskets by sophomore forward Davon Daniels (Paterson, N.J.).
Leading by four, senior guard Eric Prue (Auburn, Maine) buried a three pointer to give the Black & Gold a 20-13 lead with 5:20 left in the half. Connecticut College cut the lead to as few as four but Wentworth would hold a lead as large as eight late in the half and held a 26-20 lead at the break. The Leopards held the Camels to 27.3 percent shooting from the floor over the opening 20:00.
After a senior forward Matt Harte (Troy, N.Y.) layup 1:31 into the second half put Wentworth ahead by eight (28-20), Connecticut College used a 10-1 run – capped off by a Harrigan three pointer – to take a 30-29 lead with 14:48 left. On the next possession, sophomore guard Derek Mayo (Casco, Maine) hit a jumper to put the hosts back up by one, but a sophomore forward Mason Lopez (Edgewater, N.J.) gave the visitors the lead for good at 32-31.
The basket by Lopez began an 8-0 Camel run and saw Connecticut College lead, 38-31, with 9:24 left. A second-chance basket by freshman guard Nico Donato (Glastonbury, Conn.) and basket from junior guard Corey Therriault (Auburn, Maine) cut the lead to three with 7:19 left. Lopez and Mayo twice exchanged baskets making it a 42-39 game with 3:57 left, but the Camels scored the next 11 points to lead by 14 (53-39) with 30 seconds left.
Lopez and sophomore forward John Bullitt (Brookline, Mass.) scored nine apiece for the Camels, who shot 57.9 percent in the second half. Bullitt also added five rebounds and four assists, while sophomore guard Jethro Anilus (Stamford, Conn.) had eight points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Connecticut College made 15 of 16 free throws on the game, including hitting its first 13.
Therriault led the Leopards with 10 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Mayo added eight points, three rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
Winners of two in a row, Connecticut College improves to 2-4 is at Salve Regina on Saturday. Wentworth drops its second straight to fall to 4-2. The Leopards are idle until Dec. 15 when they travel to Edinburg, Texas, to face Division I Texas-Pan American.
