Second Half Propels Curry Past Men's Basketball Team

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team broke open a tight contest with a 58-point second half, and cruised to a 92-70 win over visiting Wentworth in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball action Saturday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels improve to 7-8 overall and 5-3 in conference play, while the Leopards fall to 9-6 overall and 5-4 in CCC action.

Curry took its biggest lead of the first half (27-17) after sophomore Lambros Papalambros (Quincy, Mass.) made a layup with 4:18 remaining in the period. Wentworth responded with a 15-4 run that culminated with a jumper by senior Eric Prue (Auburn, Maine) with 50 seconds left to give his team a one-point edge (32-31). Colonels' senior Andrew Veilleux (Bar Harbor, Maine) then sank a three-pointer with 34 seconds remaining to give the hosts a two-point lead (34-32) heading into the break.

The Colonels opened the second half on an 8-0 run, capped off with a three-pointer by senior Michael Connery (Narragansett, R.I.). The Leopards pulled to within five (51-46) after a made layup by sophomore Derek Mayo (Casco, Maine) at 9:54. But the hosts went on to dominate down the stretch, aided in large part by junior Sedale Jones' (Pittsfields, Mass.) 14 second-half points, including three from long distance.

Papalambros posted game highs in points (23), rebounds (8) and assists (8). Jones added 19 points, while sophomore Abel Ribeiro (Charlestown, Mass.) totaled 16 points and Connery kicked in with 10.

Wentworth was led by Mayo with 16 points and five assists. Prue added 12, including three from beyond the arc, while juniors Colin Johnson (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) and Corey Therriault (Auburn, Maine) added 11 and 10, respectively.

Both teams' next contests are at 7:30 p.m. at the University of New England. The Colonels take on the Nor'Easters on Monday (Jan. 23), followed by the Leopards on Wednesday (Jan. 25).
