BOSTON, Mass. – Senior guard Eric Prue (Auburn, Maine) scored 13 points and had four steals, while classmate Adam Dombrowski (Dunstable, Mass.) had 11 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks as the Wentworth men's Basketball team won its third straight game with a 57-36 win over Western New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played at Tansey Gym.
Dombrowski scored Wentworth's first six points to erase a two-point deficit and give the hosts an early, 6-2 lead. After Golden Bear junior guard Damon Alston (New Britain, Conn.) hit a layup to cut the lead to 6-4, the Leopards went on an 8-0 run when Prue converted a fastbreak layup after a steal from freshman forward Bo Leary (Auburn, Maine).
Western New England scored the next five points, with Alston tallying four of them, and trailed, 14-9, with 10:29 to play. However, Wentworth responded with a sophomore guard Derek Mayo (Casco, Maine) basket and a three pointer from Prue to up the lead back to 10.
On two occasions late in the half the Golden Bears worked the lead down to three and Wentworth held a 26-21 lead at the break. Over the first 20 minutes the Black & Gold held Western New England to 27.3 percent from the floor.
Mayo and senior guard Andre Shaw (New York, N.Y.) traded baskets to open the second stanza and a three pointer from Alston made it a 28-26 game with 18:49 remaining. However, the Leopards used a 9-0 run to take a 37-26 lead, capped off by a freshman guard Nico Donato (Glastonbury, Conn.) layup with 14:35 left.
Western New England would get as close as nine with 12:36 to play, but an 8-2 spurt by the Leopards, capped off by a putback from sophomore forward Davon Daniels (Paterson, N.J.) put the hosts up by 15.
Mayo finished with nine points, four rebounds, and three assists, while junior Colin Johnson (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) had seven points and five rebounds in the second half. The Leopards won the battle of the boards, 40-30, and held the Golden Bears to 25 percent shooting from the floor.
Alston and Shaw each tallied nine points for the visitors, while sophomore forward Daniel Minto (West Hempstead, N.Y.) had seven points and eight rebounds.
With the win Wentworth improves to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in CCC play. The Leopards are at Endicott Thursday night. Western New England falls to 4-6 (1-3) and hosts Salve Regina, also on Thursday.
