Men's Basketball Edges Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior guard Adam Dombrowski (Dunstable, MA) came off the bench to score 12 points and sophomore guard Derek Mayo (Casco, ME) added 11 points as the Wentworth men's basketball team posted a 53-50 victory over Western New England Thursday night (Feb. 2) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

The Leopards are now 13-6 after winning their fourth consecutive game and 9-4 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). The Golden Bears fall to 6-13 and 3-10 in conference action.

Western New England, who had lost to Wentworth by 21points (57-36) in their earlier meeting January 10 in Boston, came ready to play and took a slim 25-24 lead at halftime.

The Golden Bears then opened the second half with six straight points to take their biggest lead before Wentworth answered with a 13-0 run to go ahead 37-31 after Dombrowski hit a three-pointer with 13:06 to play.

Back-to-back three-pointers by senior guard Eric Prue (Auburn, ME) and Dombrowski gave the visitors a 43-36 advantage with 10:48 remaining.

Western New England rallied by getting within three points four times in the final 1:23 beginning when senior guard Andre Shaw (New York, NY) drained a long three-pointer to cut the margin to 47-44.

Dombrowski then made perhaps the biggest basket of the contest by sinking a 16-foot off-balance jumper from the right of the key with the shot clock winding down with 48.9 seconds left.

Sophomore forward Daniel Minto (West Hempstead, NY) made it a one-possession game (49-46) by making two free throws for the Golden Bears with 33.3 seconds left.

Junior guard Corey Therriault (Auburn, ME) sank a pair of foul shots at the 25.8 second mark for Wentworth before junior guard Damon Alston (New Britain, CT) scored on a layup to get WNE within 51-48 with 8.4 seconds to play.

Dombrowski canned two charity attempts three seconds later before Western New England sophomore guard Ryan Mickiewicz (East Longmeadow, MA) made a layup at the buzzer to account for the final points.

Therriault finished with seven points and eight rebounds while Prue dished out five assists. Mayo also chipped-in with three assists and three steals.

Shaw led the Golden Bears with 12 points and nine rebounds. Mickiewicz added 10 points with four assists. Minto contributed eight points and nine rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Wentworth shot 45.5 percent from the field while Western New England was held to 34.6 percent from the floor. Both teams had 32 rebounds.
