BOSTON, Mass. – Senior guard Adam Dombrowski (Dunstable, Mass.) connected on 7-of-11 shots from the floor, en route to an 18-point night as the Wentworth men's basketball team won its third straight game with an 80-65 win over Endicott in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at Tansey Gymnasium.
The Leopards jumped out to a 7-0 lead behind a 3-pointer from senior guard Eric Prue (Auburn, Maine) and baskets from freshman guard Nico Donato (Glastonbury, Conn.) and freshman forward John-Michael Fragnoli (Scotia, N.Y.). However, the Gulls countered with an 8-0 run, taking an 8-7 lead on a freshman forward Andre Makris (Southbury, Conn.) 3-pointer with 16:57 left in the half.
Wentworth scored the next six points – with four coming from junior guard Colin Johnson (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) – and led, 13-8, with 15:08 left before the Gulls battled back and tied the game on a 3-point play from sophomore guard Lachlan Magee (Melbourne, Australia) with 13:46 left in the frame.
The Black & Gold would lead by as many as eight on two occasions, including when sophomore guard Derek Mayo (Casco, Maine) hit a layup with 6:12 to play. The Gulls scored the next four points to cut the lead to two, and, after a Fragnoli basket, came within one on a 3-pointer from freshman guard John Henault (Lunenburg, Mass.).
Mayo and Henault traded baskets to make it a 34-33 game with 20 seconds left before Mayo fed Dombrowski with a second left in the half to give Wentworth a 36-33 advantage.
Dombrowski, junior guard Corey Therriault (Auburn, Maine), and Fragnoli opened the half with baskets for the Leopards to push the lead to nine, and, after two free throws from senior forward Tanner McEntee (Del Mar, Calif.) cut the lead to seven, Wentworth went on a 21-5 run over the next 7:15 to break the game open, taking its largest lead (23) on a 3-pointer from Donato.
Endicott would eventually whittle the lead down to nine with 2:13 remaining on a Magee layup, but Therriault answered with a putback off a Fragnoli miss and the Leopards would go 8-for-8 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the win.
Fragnoli notched a career-high 17 points to go along with five rebounds, while Prue added 16 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Dombrowski, who had 18 of the Leopards' 28 bench points, also had six assists and three steals. Wentworth shot 53.8 percent from the floor in the second half, while holding Endicott to 36.4 percent during that time and 37.5 percent for the game. The Leopards won the rebounding battle by a 44-31 margin.
Henault led the Gulls with 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting, while junior guard Lance Greene (Dorchester, Mass.) added 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Magee also went for double digits in scoring, with 12 points.
With the win, Wentworth improves to 12-6 overall and 8-4 in CCC play. Endicott drops its third straight to fall to 11-7 (6-5). Both teams are in action Thursday as the Leopards travel to Western New England and Endicott hosts Nichols.
