HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After the teams traded baskets to open the game, Wentworth took a three-point (5-2) lead on a senior Kevin Fernandez (Lawrence, Mass.) three pointer. After Wheaton took its first lead of the game (11-10) on a junior Alex Carlisle (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) three pointer, the Leopards used a 6-0 spurt to take a 16-11 lead on a layup from junior Jack Schaake (Hampton, N.H.).
  • The Lyons answered with a three from junior Evan Cook (Dunstable, Mass.) before the Black & Gold used a 21-5 run to take an 18-point lead with 8:26 left on a three pointer from junior Sam Swift (Arlington, Mass.). Wheaton broke the run with a jumper from junior Aaron Williams (Springfield, Mass.) but Swift drained a three with 7:47 left to give the visitors their largest lead of the contest, 40-21.
  • Using a 16-3 run, the Lyons trimmed the lead, pulling within six (43-37) with 3:22 left. Junior Conor Rubenskas (Bridgewater, Mass.) hit a pair of free throws with 3:00 left to push the lead to eight before Carlisle hit a three 40 seconds later to bring the hosts within five. Schaake scored the final four points of the half, giving Wentworth a 49-40 lead at the break.
  • The Leopards pushed their lead to 13 with 16:30 left in the contest, thanks to a jumper from Fernandez and held a 64-54 lead after a layup from Carrier with just under 13:00 left. Wheaton answered with an 8-0 lead run and cut the lead to two after a three-point play from Carlisle but the Black & Gold built their lead back to eight on two free throws from senior Kyle Henseler (Coventry, R.I.).
  • Outscoring Wentworth 12-4 over the next five minutes, the hosts took an 82-79 lead with 3:04 left when freshman Duncan Bubar (Newton, Mass.) made a layup. Carrier countered with a layup of his own on the next possession to bring the Leopards back within one and Schaake scored Wentworth's fourth point in a 41-second span when he made a layup to five the Black & Gold an 83-82 lead with 2:07 to play.
  • A missed basket gave Wentworth the ball back, however, an offensive foul with 77 seconds left gave the Lyons possession. A steal by Goy led to Carrier's layup which gave the Leopards a three-point advantage.
  • Wheaton went for the tie with 41 seconds left and missed the three pointer. Lennon got the rebound and would miss down the other end as the shot clock was winding down. Carlisle's chance to tie the game at the buzzer was no good, giving the Leopards their first win of the year.
  • In addition to Carrier's 29 points, three other student-athletes scored in double figures as Schaake had 15 points and eight rebounds, Swift had 12 points, all on three pointers, and Fernandez had 10 points and dished out four assists. As a team Wentworth shot 51.7 percent from the floor, including shooting 50 percent from behind the arc.
