BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Trey Carrier (Wilton, N.H.) sank two free throws with 5.3 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team to a 64-63 win over Suffolk in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Wednesday night. The win gives ninth-year head coach Arlen Galloway his 100th career win (all at Wentworth), making him the second coach in the program's NCAA history (1984-present) to win 100 or more games.

With the win the Leopards improve to 7-11 overall and 4-8 in CCC play while the Rams fall to 12-5 (7-4).

LEADING REBOUNDERS:  Carrier, 7; Goy, 5
ASSIST LEADERS:  Kyle Henseler, 6; Goy, 3

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth came out firing on all cylinders taking a six-point lead (10-4) after a layup by junior Jack Schaake (Hampton, N.H.) less than three minutes into the game. The Leopards, who at one point in the first half were shooting 80 percent from the floor, used a 14-4 run to take a 24-8 lead after a layup from Schaake with 10:27 left.
  • Suffolk trimmed the lead to nine on three occasions, including on a layup from graduate student Nate Hale (Nashua, N.H.) with 6:25 left. A three pointer from junior Sam Swift gave the Leopards another double-digit lead, however, an 8-2 run over the next 2:55 cut the lead to six with Hale scoring a basket with 3:11 left in the frame. Neither team scored for the remainder of the half and the hosts held to their six-point advantage.
  • Hale knocked down a three to open the second half before one of two free throws by Carrier ignited a 16-5 run and gave the Black & Gold a 49-35 lead with 13:49 remaining. Carrier and sophomore Sam Goy (Derry, N.H.) each had eight points during the run.
  • Using a 19-4 run, Suffolk took its first lead of the game with 6:50 remaining when Hale hit a three pointer to make it 54-53. After Carrier gave the Leopards the lead back on the next possession, the Rams scored the next six points and took a 60-55 lead on a pair of junior Aidan Sullivan (Scituate, Mass.) free throws with 4:36 left.
  • A layup by freshman Tyler Stewart (East Taunton, Mass.), followed by a free throw and a layup from Carrier tied the game at 60-60 with 2:51 to play. With 97 seconds left, Hale hit one of two free throws to give Suffolk a 61-60 lead. On the ensuing possession, Stewart hit a layup, giving Wentworth the lead again.
  • Both teams missed three pointers on their respective possessions and Suffolk had possession with 39 seconds left. With 18.7 seconds left, Hale was fouled and hit both free throws to give the Rams the lead. Out of a time out, Carrier got the ball from classmate Kyle Henseler (Coventry, R.I.), drove down the left side of the lane, and was fouled. He stepped to the line and sank both, giving the Black & Gold a 64-63 lead.
  • Suffolk had one last chance as Sullivan drove to the basket, however, his shot was off the mark as time expired.
  • Carrier led all scorers with 27 points, connecting on 10-of-18 shots and also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Goy added 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists, while Henseler dished out a game-high six assists.
  • Hale led Suffolk with 24 points while freshman Keenan Robertson (Rochester, N.Y.) had 13 points and nine rebounds.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Tonight was the first meeting between the two teams since November 23, 1999 and the 16th all-time. Suffolk leads, 10-6.
