Second Half Run Lifts Men's Basketball to Road Win over Curry

MILTON, Mass. – Senior Trey Carrier (Wilton, N.H.) recorded his 10th double-double of the season, scoring 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team defeated Curry, 83-74, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Wednesday night.

With the win the Leopards improve to 9-14 overall and 6-11 in CCC play while the Colonels fall to 2-22 (1-16)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The opening half featured four ties and eight lead changes as the teams battled back and forth. Curry took the largest lead by either team when senior Jonathan Joel (Cranston, R.I.) made a layup with 7:20 left, giving the Colonels a 28-22 lead. The hosts led, 32-27, after junior Angelo Sardegna (Tampa, Fla.) made a layup with 3:40 left but Carrier hit a jumper and junior Sam Swift (Arlington, Mass.) hit a three to quickly erase the deficit.
  • Sardegna hit two free throws to put Curry on top before senior Tyler Lennon (Atkinson, N.H.) followed with a jumper to even the score for the third time in the first half. On the next possession sophomore Lowelle Torres (Vineyard, N.J.) followed with a layup, putting the Colonels up by two. With six seconds left, freshman Tyler Stewart (East Taunton, Mass.) hit a jumper, which tied the score at 38-all at the break.
  • The Leopards opened the second half on a 21-9 run to take a 59-47 lead when freshman Jack Connell (Walpole, Mass.) hit a three pointer. Wentworth took its largest lead of the night when Carrier hit a layup with 8:25 left and maintained a double-digit lead until Sardegna hit a three with 5:12 left. After nearly five minutes of neither team scoring, Torres hit a three which trimmed the lead to five but a jumper from Lennon and a layup from Carrier gave the Black & Gold a 76-67 lead with 92 seconds left.
  • Carrier went 10-for-20 from the floor, leading three players in double figures. Junior Jack Schaake (Hampton, N.H.) went 5-for-7 from the floor, finishing with 15 points and eight rebounds while classmate Conor Rubenskas (Bridgewater, Mass.) was 4-for-5 from the floor, scoring 12 points. Wentworth shot 50.8 percent from the floor and had a 42-29 rebounding advantage.
  • Torres led all scorers with 23 points.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Tonight was the 64th all-time meeting between the two teams. Wentworth has won the last 14 meetings between the two teams and holds a 40-24 series advantage.

NEXT UP:

  • Wentworth closes out the regular season at home on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. tip against the University of New England. The game will determine where the Leopards and Nor'Easters will face each other in the opening round of the CCC Tournament.
