NEWPORT, R.I. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team suffered a 70-48 loss to Salve Regina University, as the Seahawks picked up their conference leading 10th Commonwealth Coast Conference win of the season.

RECORDS:

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Points Leader: Jack Schaake (11)
  • Rebounds Leader: Trey Carrier (8)
  • Assists Leader: Four players tied (2)
  • Steals Leader: Four players tied (1)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Despite an early basket by junior forward Jack Schaake (Hampton, N.H.), the Seahawks jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first six minutes of play. A layup by freshman forward Tyler Stewart (East Taunton, Mass.), who led Wentworth with 11 points on the night, pulled the Leopards to within one score, but back-to-back baskets from the Seahawks' Cameron Collins (Montville, Conn.) helped Salve Regina to an 11-5 lead midway through the first half.
  • After a pair of lauyps from senior forward Trey Carrier (Wilton, N.H.) and sophomore guard Sam Goy (Derry, N.H.), and a pair of free throws from Stewart, the Leopards were once again able to cut the lead down to one possession at 15-12 with 7:32 remaining. But seven unanswered points from the Seahawks, including four from Andrew Richards (Rosedale, N.Y.), pushed the Salve Regina lead to double digits in the final four minutes. Junior guard Sam Swift (Arlington, Mass.) answered with a three pointer, but the Seahawks came right back with a three of their own, starting a 7-0 run to take a 31-17 lead with less than a minute to go. However, Stewart came on strong in the closing moments of the first half, scoring six straight points in the final 45 seconds as the Leopards ended the first half facing a 31-23 deficit.
  • Wentworth continued the momentum to start out the second half, as a jumper from Carrier and a shot from beyond the arc by Swift got the visitors within five. But Mikey Spencer (Abington, Mass.), who led all scorers with 25 points, put in a three to get Salve started on a 13-2 run, which was capped off by another three from Spencer. The run spanned nearly five minutes and pushed the Salve Regina lead to 16 points with seven minutes gone by in the half.
  • Schaake came back with a pair of baskets that trimmed the deficit to 13, but two scores from Collins gave the Seahawks a 53-37 lead with under six minutes to go. Spencer then made a trio of three pointers to give Salve Regina their largest lead at 25 points with three minutes left, as the home team went on to pick up a 70-48 victory.
