Men's Soccer Drops Second Straight

Men's Soccer Drops Second Straight

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior midfielder Justin Martins' (Ludlow, Mass.) goal with 28:59 remaining in the second half snapped a 1-all tie and lifted the Western New England men's soccer team to its third straight win, a 2-1 triumph over Wentworth in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played on Sweeney Field.

The host Leopards got on the board at the 8:20 mark when senior midfielder David Lagarce (Lenox, Mass.) fed a pass to junior forward Josh Deschene (Webster, Mass.).  Deschene fired a rocket from the right side that found the upper left corner of the net.  However, the Golden Bears would even the score just over 10:00 later when junior midfielder Shawn Fitzpatrick (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) was able to control a loose ball from 13 yards out and find an opening inside the left post.

Neither team would have quality chances to take the lead throughout the remainder of the first half and the game would remain tied.  Western New England held a slim advantage in shots, 7-6.

Martins' marker, coming at 61:01 was a shot from 16 yards out that would glance off a Wentworth defender and into the net, capping off the two-goal rally.

Freshman Domenick Villano (Bronxville, N.Y.) made just one save as he improved to 5-1-1 on the season.  Wentworth sophomore John Longo (Needham, Mass.) made three saves to fall to 0-1.  Western New England won the shot battle, 17-11.

Wentworth, which dropped its second in a row, fell to 3-4-0 overall and 1-2-0 in conference play.  The Leopards are at Curry on Friday.  Western New England improves to 5-3-1 (3-0-0) and is at Nichols on Saturday.
