Leopards Win Second Straight

Leopards Win Second Straight

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior midfielder David Lagarce (Lenox, Mass.) and senior forward Josh Deschene (Webster, Mass.) each scored in the second half as the Wentworth men's soccer team won its second straight game, a 2-0 win over New England College in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference game played on Sweeney Field.

The host Leopards controlled play early, having three corner kicks within a span of 1:40 and putting three shots on goal.  However, Wentworth, which held a 16-6 shot advantage and a 7-3 corner kick advantage after 45:00, could not take advantage and neither team would break the through the first 45:00.

At 62:17, freshman Mike Souza (Fall River, Mass.) fed a pass outside the box to Lagarce.  Lagarce would get off a shot to the near post that would find the back of the net after a deflection of a Pilgrim defender.

After a Leopard corner kick was controlled by New England College, Deschene would intercept a clearing pass and bury a shot to the right side with 9:58 remaining in the contest.  Wentworth had a chance to go ahead, 3-0, when sophomore midfielder Devin Richard (Smithfield, R.I.) took a penalty kick that was stopped by Pilgrim senior keeper Pat Harkin (Scituate, R.I.).  The Leopards continued apply pressure, but Harkin made a pair of late saves to keep it a two-goal game.  New England College had a chance to get on the board just before time expired, but senior keeper Brian Pearsall (Sanford, Maine) helped his own cause with a save from a shot from 18 yards out.

Pearsall made seven saves to record his third shutout of the season.  Harkin would finish the game with 15 saves as Wentworth outshot New England College by a 29-11 margin.  The Leopards also held a 12-3 advantage on corner kicks.

With the win, Wentworth climbs over .500 as the Leopards improve to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in TCCC play.  The Pilgrims dropped their second straight to stand at 6-6 overall and 3-4 in conference play.  Both teams are in action on Saturday as Wentworth is at Roger Williams and New England College is at Curry.
