Leopards Swept to Open TCCC Play

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Heather Carrier (Scarborough, Maine) combined to go 7-for-8 from the plate and drive in six runs to help the Curry College softball team sweep a The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader over Wentworth, 7-2 and 19-1.

The Colonels scored three times in the first inning of the opener using a RBI triple by senior Janelle Mayo (Worcester, Mass.) and an RBI ground out from freshman Kaitlyn Maderios (East Bridgewater, Mass.) to help the scoring.  Curry added single runs in the second and third innings before rounding out the scoring with a pair of runs on a Carrier single in the top of the seventh.

Wentworth got its lone runs in the home half of the seventh when freshman Haylee Bacik (Lowell, Mass.) singled home senior Lizz Harvey (McConnellsburg, Pa.) and junior Randi Swihart (Gardner, Mass.) singling in Bacik.

Freshman Jennifer Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) picked up the win in the circle, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out a dozen.  Lundstrom set down the first nine batters she faced.  Carrier paced the offense by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Mayo and senior Amanda Peters (East Bridgewater, Mass.) each had two hits.

Four different players recorded hits for the Leopards, while freshman Stephanie MacLeay (Ashley Falls, Mass.) took the loss.

Curry scored nine times in the top of the first inning of the nightcap, with the help of six walks – including four straight with the bases loaded.  Freshman Megan Flaherty (Medway, Mass.) delivered the big blow of the inning, coming on a three-run triple in her second at bat of the frame.  The Colonels sent 13 batters to the plate in the first inning.

The Leopards scored a run in the home half of the second inning when MacLeay reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Bacik, who had reached on an error.  Curry scored six times in the top of the third to make it a 15-1 game, with Carrier delivering an RBI single and Maderios belting a three-run home run.

Carrier led the Colonels' 16-hit attack by going 4-for-4 with three RBI.  Flaherty was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI, while Maderios drove in four runs.  Freshman Chelsea Munsey (Leominster, Mass.) allowed an unearned run on two hits while striking out seven in the win.

Junior Samantha Altieri (Lakeville, Mass.) and freshman Amanda O'Neil (Revere, Mass.) collected Wentworth's two hits, while Bacik took the loss.

Curry improves to 5-7 overall and 2-0 in TCCC play.  The Colonels host Fitchburg State on Thursday in a non-conference doubleheader.  Wentworth falls to 0-12 (0-2) and is at Eastern Nazarene on Friday.
