Golden Bears Take Two From Leopards

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, Mass.) went a combined 3-for-6 from the plate and drove in six runs while sophomore Rachelle Fecteau (East Lyme, Conn.) pitched a three-hit shutout in game one as the Western New England softball team swept a The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader from Wentworth, taking the first game, 8-0, and completing the sweep with a 14-1 win in the nightcap.

The Golden Bears got all the runs they would need in the opener in the third inning, as Wyrwa had a two-run, bases-loaded double.  An inning later WNEC tacked on five runs to open the game up, with two of the runs coming on a Wyra triple.

In the home half of the inning Wentworth mounted its best threat of the game, loading the bases with one out as freshman Amanda O'Neil (Revere, Mass.) and junior Randi Swihart (Gardner, Mass.) each singled and freshman Roniece Bridge (White Plains, N.Y.) walked.  However, Fecteau got a strikeout and a lineout to end the threat.

The visitors added a run in the fifth inning as Fecteau helped her cause with an RBI single.

Wyrwa was 2-for-3 with four RBI to lead four Golden Bear players with two-hit games.  Fecteau, sophomore Jeana Longo (Schenectady, N.Y.) and freshman Katie Eckert (Lee, Mass.) also recorded to hits.  Fecteau (2-2) scattered three hits, walked four, and struck out three.

Senior Jen Giudice (Central Valley, N.Y.), O'Neil, and Swihart had Wentworth's hits while freshman Stephanie MacLeay (Ashley Falls, Mass.) was tagged with the loss.

In game two Western New England scored in the top of the first when Wyrwa had an RBI single that scored senior Trish Breault (Millville, Mass.).  In the home half of the inning the hosts got the lone run they would score when senior Lizz Harvey (McConnellsburg, Pa.) blasted her seventh home run of the season down the right field line.

The Golden Bears broke the tie in the second with a three-run inning and would add five more in the third inning.  Breault had an RBI single in the second and freshman Laura Madaio (Paxton, Mass.) and senior Angela Monaco (Monroe, Conn.) also added RBI singles in the third.

Leading 9-1 heading into the fifth inning, Western New England scored five times on six hits to complete the scoring.

Breault, Madaio, sophomore Jennifer Mears (Amherst, Mass.), and senior Erin Griffin (Lowell, Mass.) each had two hits, while Wyrwa and Madaio drove in two runs apiece.  Junior Alyssa Obin (Plymouth, Mass.) picked up the win (3-2) allowing one run on three hits and striking out two

Giudice, Harvey, and MacLeay had Wentworth's three hits while freshman Haylee Bacik (Lowell, Mass.) picked up the loss.
