Softball Falls Twice at Roger WIlliams

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team kicked off the 2011 Commonwealth Coast Conference season with a pair of wins against Wentworth Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon, taking the first game 10-0 and the second 13-5, both in five innings.

Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) tamed the Leopard offense throughout the contest. After allowing a single to Lizz Harvey (McConnellsburg, Pa.), the third batter of the game, Doolin would not surrender another hit over the course of the game. She finished with her first shutout of the season, striking out a season-high eight batters in the game.

Offensively, the Hawks tacked on all of their runs in two separate innings. In the bottom of the first, Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.) knocked in Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.) and Sarah Grill (Watervliet, N.Y.) with a three-run homer to center field to put RWU on top 3-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Hawks brought 11 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs in the frame off of seven hits. Castro and Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn.) each picked up two-RBI hits in the inning. Doolin would then strike out the side in the top of the fifth to get the shortened win.

Castro finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI for the Hawks, while Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) was perfect at the dish, going 2-for-2 with an RBI, a run scored, and a walk.

Stephanie MacLeay (Ashley Falls, Mass.) suffered the loss for Wentworth, giving up all ten runs in the contest on 11 hits and five walks.

The second game saw the Hawk offense score at least once in all four innings. In the bottom of the first, Pirez brought in Castro with a sacrifice fly to right and Rachel Ehrlich (Southport, Conn.) doubled in Marcin to put the Hawks up 2-0.

Roger Williams would then put up five-spots in both the second and third innings to take a commanding 12-0 lead. Grill picked up two-RBI hits in each inning with a single in the second and a double in the third. Ehrlich also earned a two-RBI double in the third.

After adding one more in the fourth, the Hawks appeared to be on their way to an easy win before the Leopards made one last push in the top of the fifth. Paige Mochi (Cambridge, Mass.) and Amanda O'Neil (Revere, Mass.) both reached base to lead off the inning and would later come around to score. Haylee Bacik (Lowell, Mass.) and Roniece Bridge (White Plains, N.Y.) each tacked on RBI hits for the Leopards before Bacik scored on a throwing error. In all, Wentworth brought five runs across before Marcin earned the final out for the win.

Marcin picked up her first win of the year, allowing the five runs (three earned) in four innings pitched. Ehrlich, Marcin, Castro and Grill each had three hits in the game for the Hawks, with Grill adding a season-best four RBI and three runs scored.

Harvey took the loss for Wentworth, tagged for all 13 runs (nine earned). She also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Bacik and O'Neil each had a hit and a run scored for the Leopards.

Roger Williams (3-11, 2-0 TCCC) hosts Anna Maria College Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m., while Wentworth (0-16, 0-6 TCCC) searches for its first win of the year Tuesday against Emmanuel College.
