Hockey Holds on to Defeat Wesleyan

SALEM, Mass. – Senior Mike Domsodi's (Kirkland, Que.) second goal of the game, coming at 5:13 of the third period, snapped a 3-all tie and lifted the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team to a 4-3 win over Wesleyan at the Salem State Holiday Invitational. The win snapped a four-game winless (0-2-2) streak for the Leopards against the Cardinals as Wentworth notched its first series win since December 10, 2005.

Wentworth's second consecutive win pushes the Leopards to 6-5-1 on the season while Wesleyan dropped its third straight to stand at 2-7-0. The Leopards will play host Salem State in the tournament's championship Sunday at 4:00 as the Vikings defeated Suffolk, 4-1. The Cardinals and Rams will play in the consolation game at 1:00.

The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead late in the first period when freshman Jordan Jancze (Stillwater, Minn.) put home the rebound of a classmate Dylan Holze (Lynbrook, N.Y.) shot at 16:39. Also assisting on the goal was junior Jaren Taenaka (Rosemond, Calif.). The lead would be short-lived, however, as Wentworth evened the score 1:18 later. Senior Jordan Bourgonje (Spruce Grove, Alta.) won a face-off and sent the pass to junior Jake Diamond (Lakewood, Colo.), who scored five-hole.

Wesleyan took a 2-1 lead at the 5:47 mark of the middle frame when Holze put home a rebound of a senior James Albrecht (Commerce Township, Mich.) shot that ricocheted off the crossbar. Again, Wentworth answered quickly, knotting the score at 2-all when senior Ben Iwanowski (Dorval, Que.) scored from classmate Sean McLaughlin (North Billerica, Mass.) and freshman Chris Sattler (East Longmeadow, Mass.) at 7:06.

Domsodi netted his first of the game when he scored a 4-on-4 marker with 13 seconds left in the period after Sattler set him up.

The Cardinals tied the game at 3:36 of the third period when senior Jay Matthews (Marshfield, Mass.) scored from sophomore James Kline (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and junior Alex Carlacci (Port Jefferson, N.Y.). A minute and 37 seconds later, Domsodi broke in alone and put home what would be the game winner.

Wesleyan pulled sophomore Dawson Springings (Toronto, Ont.) over the final 1:53 for an extra attacker, however was unable to net the game-tying goal.

Senior Alex Peck (Kirkland, Que.) made 25 saves to improve to 5-3 on the season while Springings made 23 stops. Wesleyan had a 28-27 edge on shots and neither team scored on its respective six extra-man opportunities.
