Women's Lacrosse Falls in Season Opener

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team scored five times in the first 13:51 and never looked back as the Eagles defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 13-4, in non-conference action Monday afternoon.

Bridgewater improves to 3-1 on the season while Wentworth dropped its season opener.

Junior Claire Palermo-Re (Manassas, Va.) scored the game's first two goals 44 seconds apart which was followed by single goals from freshman Anna O'Hara (Fairfax, Va.), senior Jenna Devilbiss, and junior Annie O'Sullivan (Prince Edward, Md.). Senior Pam Mudge (Hooksett, N.H.) got Wentworth on the board with 8:52 left in the half, and, after freshman Sarah Yashinskie (North East, Md.) made it 6-1, freshman Kaleigh Stirrat (Saugus, Mass.) closed out the half with a goal with 54 seconds left.

A pair of freshman Phoebe Hart (Roanoke, Va.) goals were sandwiched around a freshman Leah Cummins (Plymouth, Mass.) goal to make it 8-3. Yashinskie and Palermo-Re upped the lead to 10-3 with 16:19 remaining before freshman Brooke Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) made it 10-4 with 14:14 left. The Eagles scored the final three goals to round out the scoring.

Junior Rachel Gruber (Fair Lawn, N.J.) picked up the win for Bridgewater with six saves. Bridgewater held the shot advantage at 38-16, while the Eagles also held the edge in ground balls (9-8) and draw controls (12-7). 

Senior Hayley Patton (Cranston, R.I.) made 12 saves in the loss for Wentworth, which takes on Shenandoah on Wednesday.
