BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – A 10-goal first half helped the Massachusetts Maritime Academy women's lacrosse team cruise to a 15-7 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.
With the win the Buccaneers improve to 3-2 on the season while the Leopards fall to 2-6.
Mass. Maritime spared little time getting on the board and found the back of the net three times before Wentworth notched a goal from freshman Brooke Paradis (Pelham, N.H.). Junior Amanda Dexter (Harvard, Mass.) followed up with a goal that would put the Black & Gold within three, but the Buccaneers grabbed the 10-2 edge at the end of the first thanks to three tallies from sophomore Stephanie Hunt (Brookfield, Conn.).
Paradis knocked in three more goals in a five-minute span in the second to help the Leopards slash the Buccaneers' lead down to four at 10-6, however three straight Mass. Maritime goals extended the lead to 13-6. Graduate student Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.) scored with 2:15 left to make it 13-7 before the hosts tallied the final two goals to seal the win.
Hunt recorded four goals and a pair of assists while scooping up five ground balls in the win. Solari and freshman Erica Overstreet (Bridgewater, Mass.) each had five-point days coming on three goals and two assists apiece while junior Dahlia Seggelin (Sharon, Mass.) registered four helpers and five draw control wins. Sophomore Mikayla Correia (Dartmouth, Mass.) made 14 saves as the Buccaneers held the edge in draw controls (13-11), shots (41-28), and ground balls (31-25).
Paradis powered the Leopard offense with four goals and an assist while also scooping up six ground balls and winning five draw controls. Freshman Kaleigh Stirrat (Saugus, Mass.) caused four turnovers. Senior Hayley Patton (Cranston, R.I.) made 23 saves which ties her for second most in a single game in Wentworth program history.
Wentworth opens Commonwealth Coast Conference pay on Tuesday afternoon against Roger Williams while Mass. Maritime is idle until Saturday, April 2, when it hosts Mass. College.
