Women's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Wentworth women's volleyball team split a pair of matches at a tri-match hosted by Pine Manor on Saturday. The Leopards swept Lesley, 3-0, before falling to the host Gators, 3-2.

Against Lesley (2-4), Wentworth hit .471 in the opening set, en route to a 25-15 win and never looked back as the Leopards beat the Lynx 25-18 and 25-12 to complete the sweep.

Senior Julie Bruton (Montgomery, Texas) had nine kills, hit .471, recorded eight digs, and had three aces in the win. Junior Julie Rahilly (Nashua, N.H.) chipped in with nine kills and four aces, while sophomore Michelle Hobbs (Northwood, N.H.) had six kills and seven digs. Freshman Shannon Ponce (San Jose Calif.) had 26 assists and four digs.

The Leopards carried the momentum from the Lesley match through the first two sets of the match against Pine Manor, taking the first set by a 25-19 score and going up, 2-0, with a 25-17 win in the second set. However, the Gators (4-0) rallied to take the third set by a 25-22 score and forced a fifth and deciding set with a 25-21 win in the fourth set. In the fifth set the hosts put away the Leopards by a 15-11 score.

Rahilly had a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs while Bruton added a double-double of her own, recording 10 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) has five aces and 14 digs, Hobbs had 14 digs, and Ponce had 30 assists.

Wentworth stands at 5-7 overall and opens Commonwealth Coast conference play on Tuesday when the Leopards host Gordon.
