Women's Volleyball to Help Raise Breast Cancer Awareness

Women's Volleyball to Help Raise Breast Cancer Awareness

BOSTON, Mass. – On Saturday, October 22, when the Wentworth women's volleyball team hosts the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, the Leopards' traditional black and gold colors will turn pink for the day to promote breast cancer awareness and help find a cure for this disease.

For the second time in the last three years, the Leopard women's volleyball team will be one of over 1,000 college, high school, middle school, and club teams participating in The Side-Out Foundation's annual awareness event, "Dig Pink."

Leopard student-athletes and coaches will be wearing pink during this match and all spectators attending the match are asked to join in visually raising awareness by wearing pink. The match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Tansey Gymnasium on the Wentworth campus and admission is free. Donations to the Side-Out Foundation can be made through the Wentworth page on The Side-Out Foundation's site. All proceeds benefit Side-Out, which in turn awards grants to medical research organizations and entities dedicated to providing compassionate support to breast cancer patients and their families.

The Side-Out Foundation was established in 2004 to unite volleyball players and coaches and to have them work toward the common goal of furthering breast cancer awareness, education and patient services. Side-Out supports teams nationwide in their volleyball tournaments, clinics and other fundraising efforts. The foundation offers practical support for fundraising in addition to educational material for participants in order to help them become effective advocates for breast cancer. Side-Out contributes the funds to organizations that serve breast cancer patients, whether it be in the form of research, medical services or compassionate support.

Two years ago the Leopards participated in the event for the first time and raised over $1,100.
