BOSTON, Mass. – Director of Athletics Angel Ayres today announced the hiring of Evin Giglio as the new Head Women's Volleyball Coach at Wentworth Institute of Technology, effective immediately. Giglio had served as the program's interim head coach this past spring after Jenn Kelemen stepped down after two seasons.
"I am excited to have Coach Giglio as our women's volleyball coach," said Ayres. "In his first season coaching our men's program Evin led our men's volleyball team to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament and he has proven to be a great mentor for our student-athletes and a relentless recruiter. These attributes will certainly help our women's program as well. At the same time, I wish Jenn Kelemen all the best in her new endeavor. She was a great role model for our student-athletes and truly cared about the program and its growth."
Giglio lead the Leopard men's volleyball team to a 13-16 record this past season, including a 7-7 mark in league play, which was good for fourth place. Of Wentworth's 16 losses, nine came to nationally ranked foes and two others were in five games. The Black & Gold qualified for a conference tournament for the first time since 2001 when they appeared in the GNAC Tournament – in the program's first season playing in a new conference. Wentworth was defeated by Albertus Magnus, 3-1. One of his players, sophomore Ross Burdett, earned Second Team All-GNAC honors.
Before arriving on the Wentworth campus last summer, Giglio served as an Assistant Women's Volleyball Coach at Austin Peay University during the 2010 season where he primarily worked with the middle blockers as well as assisting with practice planning, player evaluation, scouting reports, film breakdown, team travel, and game day operations. The Governors enjoyed their best record in 18 seasons, going 25-7 (14-4 Ohio Valley Conference) won their first OVC Championship since 1991 and earned the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. One of his middle blockers, Jessica Mollman, was named all-conference, while a second, Taylor Skinner, set career highs for kills, hitting percentage, and blocks.
Giglio was involved with the men's volleyball program at Springfield College for two seasons. As a junior, he appeared in seven matches and helped the Pride to a 14-10 record and a berth in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association – a Division I men's volleyball conference – Quarterfinals. A year later he was a student assistant for the Pride, helping them to a 20-11 record and the sixth Molten Division III Men's Volleyball National Championship in program history. He graduated from Springfield in 2010 with a Bachelor's degree in communication/sports journalism.
Prior to arriving at Springfield, Giglio played two seasons for Moorpark (Calif.) College where he was a starting middle blocker and served as a team captain. He recorded 12 blocks in a match, which still stands as a program record. In addition to playing for the Raiders, he was also a student assistant for the women's team. He earned an Associate's degree from Moorpark in 2008.
Giglio has worked camps at Springfield, Moorpark, and Austin Peay and was also involved with the Conejo Crush Volleyball Club as an assistant coach with the 14-year old age group and a co-head coach with the 15-year old age group. This summer he is slated to work camps at the University of New Hampshire as well as working at camps run by Gold Medal Squared.
"I am excited about taking over the women's program at Wentworth," said Giglio. "The entire athletic administration, especially Athletic Director Ayers, has been extremely helpful in my first year at Wentworth. I am looking forward to coaching both the men's and women's program at Wentworth and building upon an already solid foundation."
The 2011 Leopard women's volleyball team matched a program record for wins with 14 as Wentworth finished 14-15 and qualified for the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament for the first time since 2006. The Leopards open the 2012 campaign on Friday, August 31, at Babson.
