Gordon Edges Softball Twice

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team hosted Gordon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, as the Fighting Scots took the opener by a 5-2 final and edged the Leopards 6-4 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE:  Gordon 5, Wentworth 2

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Wentworth Batting Leaders:  Ceilidh Higgins (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI), Alexandra Pina (1-for-3), Julia Bollentin (1-for-3), Brionna Myers (1-for-3), Sabrina Haarstick (1-for-3), Kaitlin Pettenger (1-for-4)
Wentworth Pitching Leaders:  Kayla DeMedeiros (L, 0-5), 4 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 5 K), Erin Hancock (3 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 K)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Gordon plated two runs in the third, but the Leopards sliced that margin in half in the fourth when junior Ceilidh Higgins (Medway, Mass.) singled in a run.
  • The Fighting Scots got a run back in the fifth and two unearned tallies in the sixth, as Higgins accounted for the other Wentworth run with a solo homer to left for her second hit of the day.
  • Senior Brionna Myers (Seabrook, N.H.), juniors Alexandra Pina (Cumberland, R.I.) and Sabrina Haarstick (Bellingham, Mass.) and sophomores Julia Bollentin (South Kingstown, R.I.) and Kaitlin Pettenger (Budd Lake, N.J.) each added hits for the hosts.
  • Senior Kayla DeMedeiros (South Dartmouth, Mass.) struck out five in four innings of work for the Leopards, who received two strikeouts in three innings from sophomore Erin Hancock (Holden, Mass.).

GAME TWO:  Gordon 6, Wentworth 4

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Wentworth Batting Leaders:  Briana Beverly (2-for-4, 3B, 3 RBI), Alexandra Pina (2-for-4), Kaitlin Pettenger (2-for-4)
Wentworth Pitching Leaders:  Kayla DeMedeiros (L, 0-6), 5 IP, 7 H), Erin Hancock (2 IP, 1 H, 2 K)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Gordon scored three times in its first at-bat, but Wentworth loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning on three straight singles only to see the visitors escape.
  • The Fighting Scots received a homer in the top of the third before Kayla DeMedeiros got the Leopards on the board in the bottom half of the frame after scoring on a fielding error.
  • A passed ball in the fourth plated the visitors' fifth tally, but a sixth inning rally pulled the hosts back within a run.  Junior Briana Beverly (Pawcatuck, Conn.) drove in all three runs in that frame with a one-out triple to deep left, but Gordon was able to leave the tying run at third base.
  • A solo homer in the seventh provided insurance for the Fighting Scots to account for the final margin.
  • Alexandra Pina and Kaitlin Pettenger joined Beverly with two hits as part of an 11-hit nightcap attack for Wentworth.
  • Kayla DeMedeiros allowed four earned runs over five innings for the Leopards, while Erin Hancock fanned a pair over the final two frames.

ALL-TIME SERIES

  • Today marked the 47th and 48th meetings between the teams.  Gordon holds a 35-13 series advantage.
