Softball Picks up Split Against Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team picked up its first Commonwealth Coast Conference victory of the season when the Leopards (2-10, 1-7) defeated Gordon (7-11, 5-5), 11-10, in game one of a doubleheader. The Fighting Scots picked up the split when they rallied to take the nightcap, 4-3.


GAME ONE:  Wentworth 11, Gordon 10

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The two teams combined for 21 runs and 30 hits in a back-and-forth affair.
  • Wentworth opened the game taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Junior Briana Beverly (Pawcatuck, Conn.) hit a one-out single and came around to score after classmate Alexandra Pina (Cumberland, R.I.) singled and moved up on an error. Gordon took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning, using a pair of RBI singles.
  • The Fighting Scots took a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning, using three RBI singles and had the bases loaded with two outs, however, a pop out recorded the third out before the hosts were able to add to their lead.
  • Sophomore Kaitlin Pettenger (Budd Lake, N.J.) hit a one-out double in the third, which was followed by a Beverly walk. Pina singled to load the bases before senior Kayla DeMedeiros (South Dartmouth, Mass.) hit a two-run double. After a walk to junior Ceilidh Higgins (Medway, Mass.). sophomore Julia Bollentin (South Kingstown, R.I.) Singled in Pina. Senior Brionna Myers (Seabrook, N.H.) grounded out to score DeMedeiros, while Higgins scored on a passed ball, which moved Bollentin to third. Junior Aurora Wilks (Fruitport, Mich.) singled in Bollentin to give Wentworth a 7-5 lead.
  • The Leopards added to their lead with a three-run fourth inning. Pettenger led off with a single and went to third when Beverly singled and went to second on the throw. DeMedeiros reached on an error, scoring Pettenger, and, after DeMedeiros stole second, Higgins grounded out which scored Beverly and moved DeMedeiros to third. DeMedeiros scored on a wild pitch.
  • Using a pair of RBI singles, Gordon cut into the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and tied the game with a three-run sixth. Sophomore Maria Little (Port Deposit, Md.) hit a two-run double, and scored on an RBI single from senior Lily Rivera (Concord, N.H.).
  • Myers led off the top of the seventh with a single and went to third on an error. After a groundout, junior Sabrina Haarstick (Bellingham, Mass.) struck out but reached on a passed ball, which allowed Myers to score the go-ahead run.
  • Sophomore Erin Hancock (Holden, Mass.) was summoned for the bottom of the seventh. Gordon put the tying run on with a one-out error, however, Hancock got a fielder's choice and a strikeout to end the game.
  • DeMedeiros got the win in relief (1-6), allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits. Hancock pitched one inning to pick up her first save, striking out one. Wilks started the game, allowing five runs over two innings. Offensively, Beverly, Pettenger, Pina, Myers, and Wilks each had two hits while DeMedeiros drove in three runs.


GAME TWO:  Gordon 4, Wentworth 3

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Pina hit a two-out single in the first inning and moved to third on a passed ball. DeMedeiros gave Wentworth a 1-0 lead when she singled Pina in. Gordon evened the score in the home half of the inning on an RBI single from senior Arianna Ramsaran (Johnson City, Tenn.).
  • The Fighting Scots took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a leadoff home run from senior Laura Bieren (Groton, Mass.) and maintained the slim lead until the fifth inning.
  • Wentworth scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Haarstick drew a one-out walk and went to third on a Pettenger double. Both runners came around to score when Pina laced a double in the gap.
  • Ramsaran led off the sixth by reaching on a two-base error and went to third on a groundout. She scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-all. Back-to-back singles put runners on first and third with two outs and freshman Emily Harms (Santa Cruz, Calif.) had an RBI single to drive in the go-ahead run.
  • Pettenger had a two-out single in the top of the seventh to represent the tying run, however, a groundout ended the game.
  • Hancock took the loss (1-4), allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits. At the plate, Pina was 2-for-3 with two RBI while Pettenger was 2-for-4.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today marked the 49th and 50th meetings between the two teams. Gordon holds a 35-15 series advantage.
