Pina, Beverly Drive in Two Each as Softball Concludes 2021 Campaign

BOSTON, Mass. – Playing in its final contests of the 2021 season, the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team dropped a pair of games to league-leading Endicott, 3-0, and 13-5.


GAME ONE:  Endicott 3, Wentworth 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Endicott got the only run it needed in the second inning, with a leadoff single, an error, and back-to-back groundouts.
  • Wentworth had its first chance to tie the game in the fourth inning as sophomore Kaitlin Pettenger (Budd Lake, N.J.) led off with a single. However, a fly out, ground out, and strikeout, ended the Leopards' threat.
  • Endicott added single runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth inning, the Gulls got a leadoff single and an RBI double, while an inning later, a run scored on a RBI single.
  • The bottom of the seventh inning saw Wentworth put runners on first and second with two outs. Junior Ceilidh Higgins (Medway, Mass.) singled and went to second on a sophomore Julia Bollentin (South Kingstown, R.I.) single. With the tying run at the plate, a foul fly out ended the contest.
  • Bollentin was 2-for-3 while Pettenger and Higgins each had a hit. Senior Kayla DeMedeiros (South Dartmouth, Mass.) allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and struck out one batter in the loss (1-9).


GAME TWO:  Endicott 13, Wentworth 5

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A sacrifice fly and an RBI triple gave Endicott a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, however, the lead wouldn't last long as Wentworth scored three times in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. Pettenger led off with a triple and came around to scored on an RBI double from junior Alexandra Pina (Cumberland, R.I.). Pina scored when junior Briana Beverly (Pawcatuck, Conn.) doubled her home. A groundout by DeMedeiros moved Beverly to third and she scored on a Bollentin groundout.
  • A pair of unearned runs gave Endicott the lead back in the second inning and the Gulls got two more runs in the third to take a 6-3 lead. Wentworth got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Pina launched a home run to make it 6-4.
  • Endicott scored four times over the next two innings, including scoring three times in the fifth inning to make it 10-4. Wentworth cut the lead to 10-5 in the fifth inning on an RBI single from DeMedeiros. Pettenger had a one-out infield single, and, with two outs, she moved to second when Beverly walked. DeMedeiros delivered a single to score Pettenger.
  • The Gulls scored three times in the top of the seventh to complete the scoring.
  • Sophomore Erin Hancock (Holden, Mass.) took the loss (1-5), allowing 10 runs (seven earned) on 10 hits in 4.2 innings of work. At the plate, Beverly was 3-for-3, with a walk and a double, Pina was 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and two RBI, and Pettenger was 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored.


ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today marked the 41st and 42nd all-time meetings between the two programs. Endicott holds an 41-0-1 record.
