Women's Volleyball Opens CCC Play With 3-2 Win

WENHAM, Mass. – Junior Michelle Hobbs (Northwood, N.H.) recorded 19 kills and four service aces, senior Julie Rahilly (Nashua, N.H.) added 14 kills and 15 digs, and sophomore Jessica Houghton (Billerica, Mass.) set a Wentworth single-match record with 33 digs as the Leopard women's volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat host Gordon, 3-2, in its Commonwealth Coast Conference opener.

Both teams hit under .100 in the opening set, a set that saw the Fighting Scots take a 25-18 win. Wentworth rallied to even the match with a 25-18 win in the second set, despite hitting .029 in the frame.

The third set saw the hosts take a 2-1 lead with a 25-18 win, as Gordon hit .212 as a team and held the Leopards to .091. Needing a win to extend the match, Wentworth held the Fighting Scots to a .000 hitting percentage in the fourth set and took a 25-18 win to even the match and force a fifth and deciding set.

In the fifth set, the Leopards hit an impressive .385, recording six kills on 13 swings and took the set 15-12 and the match, 3-2.

Senior Nicole Wetherbee (Pembroke, Mass.) added two aces, 11 digs, and a pair of blocks in the win while sophomore Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) chipped in with 11 assists and 16 digs.

With the win Wentworth improves to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in CCC play. The Leopards will be at Regis on Saturday for a tri-match against the Pride and Mass. Maritime.
