Women's Volleyball Falls at UMass Dartmouth

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth volleyball team's rallied after a lengthy first set to defeat Wentworth, 3-1, in non-conference action Thursday night.

After losing a marathon in the first set by a 39-37 score, the Corsairs prevailed, 25-14, 25-18 and 25-15.

For UMass Dartmouth, freshman outside hitter Stephanie Antoine (New Bedford, Mass.) had 20 kills, two errors and 34 attempts for a hitting percentage of .524, junior outside hitter Kelly Lyons (Pocasset, Mass.) had eight kills in 16 attempts for a hitting percentage of .500, and junior middle hitter Tahirah Gibson (Norwood, Mass.) had 10 kills, two errors and 24 attempts for a hitting percentage of .333.

In her penultimate home match, senior setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, Mass.) added 39 assists and four service aces. Freshman outside hitter Linsay Boulay (Swansea, Mass.) had 13 digs, while Boulay had four solo blocks.

Wentworth was paced by senior Julie Rahilly (Nashua, N.H.), who had 21 kills, four aces, and 10 digs, while junior Michelle Hobbs (Northwood, N.H.) added 12 kills and 17 digs. Senior Nicole Wetherbee (Pembroke, Mass.) added nine kills and 19 digs and sophomore Shannon Ponce (San Jose, Calif.) had 32 assists each helped the Leopard offense. Sophomore Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) had 32 digs and junior Mary Horgan (Mahwah, N.J.) had four blocks to lead the defense.

The Corsairs improved to 19-4 with the victory, while Wentworth dropped to 7-13 with the defeat.

UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Keene State Saturday. The Leopards will host Worcester State Saturday.
