Women's Volleyball Splits in Tri-Match

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College hosted Framingham State and Wentworth in a women's volleyball tri-match Saturday in Milton. In the opening match, the Leopards outlasted the Colonels, 3-2. In the second match, the Rams knocked off Wentworth, 3-1. In the final match, Framingham State blanked Curry, 3-0.

Wentworth junior Michelle Hobbs (Northwood, N.H.) had a match-high 18 kills, leading the visiting Leopards to a 3-2 victory over Curry in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match. Set scores were 25-18, 24-26, 25-14, 11-25, 15-11. The Leopards improved to 7-6 overall and 2-1 in the CCC, while the Colonels fell to 7-6 overall and 0-4 in league play.

Wentworth took the first set handily, 25-18, while Curry drew even after eking out the second set, 26-24. In the second set, the Colonels were down 24-22 but battled back with four-straight points to take the two-point win.

In the third frame, the Leopards ended on a 7-1 run to clinch the set, 25-14.

The Colonels then rallied back in the fourth set, starting out on a 12-5 run. Curry continued to cruise through the rest of the set, closing on a 6-0 run to wrap up a 25-11 win and force a fifth and deciding set.

In the fifth set, after a number of ties and lead changes, Wentworth took control in the end and won 15-11.

Senior Julie Rahilly (Nashua, N.H.) followed Hobbs with 15 kills. Sophomore Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) recorded a match-high 36 digs. Sophomore Shannon Ponce (San Hose, Calif.) dished out a match-high 39 assists.

Curry sophomore Tiana Sturtze (Worcester, Mass.) led the Colonels with a team-high 12 digs and three block assists, while sophomore Courtney DiBiasio (Conventry R.I.) had 11 kills and 27 digs. Senior Kendra LeMay (Chicopee, Mass.) also contributed 11 kills, three block assists and one solo block. Sophomore Hannah Robison (Cumberland R.I.) had a team-high 31 assists along with 21 digs.

Framingham State 3, Wentworth 1
Framingham State junior Andressa Fernandes (Framingham, Mass.) had a match-high 16 kills along with 10 digs, leading the Rams to a 3-1 victory over Wentworth. Set scores were 25-12, 19-25, 25-21, 25-23. Framingham State improved to 14-4 while the Leopards slipped to 7-7.

The Rams took the first set comfortably 25-12, but Wentworth bounced back to capture the second set, 25-19. In the third set, the Rams came from behind to record a 25-21 win. In the fourth and final set, Framingham State pulled out a closely-contested set, 25-23.

Sophomore Ashley Nee (Hanson, Mass.) followed Fernades with 15 kills. Sophomore Michelle DeJesus (Framingham, Mass.) dished out a match-high 32 digs. Sophomore Kassandra Jermyn (Auburn, Mass.) led all players with 40 assists and five service aces.

Rahilly and Hobbs shared team-high honors with 14 kills apiece. Curran recorded a team-high 26 digs, while Ponce dished out a team-high 32 assists.

Both the Colonels and Leopards return to action on Tuesday. Curry faces Roger Williams at home at 6:00 p.m. in a CCC match, while Wentworth faces CCC rival Western New England University at home at 7:00 pm. The Rams return to action on Thursday at home against the Golden Bears at 7 pm.
