AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Anna Maria College baseball team erased a 5-3 deficit with a four-run seventh inning as the AMCATS defeated Wentworth, 7-5, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After Anna Maria took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly, Wentworth answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning. Sophomore Matt McDuff (Riverside, Fla.) hit a one-out single and went to second when senior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) walked. Senior A. T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.) singled to load the bases and sophomore Matthew Favazzo (Billerica, Mass.) delivered a two-run single to score McDuff and Peruzzi.
  • In the third inning, the AMCATS loaded the bases with one out. However, the threat was ended with a double play. Carrying that momentum into the bottom of the inning, the Black & Gold struck for two runs, all coming with two out. Senior Michael Petit (Sandwich, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and went to second when Favazzo walked. Freshman Christian Roncal (Glendale, Ariz.) loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch and junior Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.) drove in Petit and Favazzo.
  • A leadoff single in the fourth by Anna Maria was erased when Wentworth turned their third double play of the inning and, an inning later, the AMCATS got on the board with an RBI single. Anna Maria pulled within a run at 4-3 with a run in the sixth with a leadoff home run. Wentworth's fourth double play of the game ended the sixth inning. In the bottom of the inning, Roncal led off with a single, and after a double play, senior Ryan Putney (Exeter, N.H.) had a pinch-hit single and came around to score on a Lapierre double.

  • Wentworth had a runner on second with two outs in the eighth but was unable to get the runner home. In the ninth inning, Lapierre led off with a single and went to second when McDuff was hit by a pitch. Peruzzi singled to load the bases, however, was out taking a wide turn. A strikeout and lineout ended the threat and the game.
