Lesley Rallies Past Baseball

LEXINGTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team surrendered three runs in the sixth inning as Lesley rallied to take a 4-3 win over the Leopards (20-12) in non-conference action Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth nearly had a chance to get on the board in the top of the first inning as freshman Christian Roncal (Glendale, Ariz.) was hit by a pitch and went to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Matthew Favazzo (Lexington, Mass.) walked, followed by senior A.T. DiPina getting hit by a pitch to load the bases. However, a double play ended the inning.
  • The Leopards got on the board in the top of the third when sophomore Mike Sibert (Billerica, Mass.) walked and went to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.). Roncal doubled in Sibert to give Wentworth a 1-0 lead.
  • An inning later, graduate student Aaron Lundgren (Portsmouth, N.H.) hit a one out double and came around to score on a sophomore Nick Cullinan (Sandy Hook, Conn.) single Sibert walked and both runners advanced on a wild pitch, however, a groundout left both in scoring position.
  • Lesley made it a 2-1 contest in the bottom of the fourth, however, Wentworth got a run back in the fifth inning, thanks to an RBI double from senior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) With two outs, DiPina was hit by a pitch, stole second, and went to third on a passed ball before Peruzzi brought him home. In the bottom of the fifth, the Lynx tried sending a runner home but was thrown out to end the inning.
  • With runners on first and second in the bottom of the sixth, an RBI single brought the hosts to within a run. After a wild pitch, a two-run single gave Lesley a 4-3 lead, a lead they would not relinquish.
  • Freshman Michael Archambault (Pepperell, Mass.) pitched the first five innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out a pair. Junior Matt Ferrara (East Taunton, Mass.) was saddled with the loss (1-3), allowing three runs in two-thirds of an inning. Junior Brady Aubuchon (Westminster, Mass.) allowed just one hit in 1.1 innings, while freshman Jacob DeCoste (Medfield, Mass.) pitched a scoreless eighth. At the plate, five student-athletes each recorded a hit, including Peruzzi who also walked to reach base twice.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today was the third all-time meeting between the two teams. Wentworth leads, 2-1.
