Roger Williams Rallies Past Baseball

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University baseball team used a four-run fifth inning to erase a 2-1 deficit as the Hawks rallied past Wentworth Institute of Technology, 5-2, in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

With the win the Hawks improve to 11-2 overall and 1-0 in league play while the Leopards fall to 12-6 (1-2).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Junior Devon Lapierre (Dover, N.H.) led the game off with a single and, with one out, went to second when senior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) singled. A walk from senior A.T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.) loaded the bases before sophomore Matthew Favazzo (Billerica, Mass.) lifted a sacrifice fly to score Lapierre.
  • Roger Williams tied the game with a run in the third as a sacrifice fly from senior Jack Morin (North Andover, Mass.) brought home the tying run.
  • The Leopards reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth. Favazzo led off with a double and went to third on a senior Michael Petit (Sandwich, Mass.) single. After Petit stole second, junior Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.) reached on an error which allowed Favazzo to score. With runners on first and second and two outs, sophomore Nick Cullinan (Sandy Hook, Conn.) singled, which moved sophomore Matt McDuff (Riverside, R.I.) to second. Prisco went to third, however, was thrown out trying to score.
  • Roger Williams took advantage of a Wentworth error with two outs, scoring all four runs after the miscue. Morin had a two-run double, which put the Hawks ahead, 4-2.
  • Wentworth had runners on in both the sixth and the ninth innings, with Prisco walking both times, however, were unable to cut into the deficit.
  • Sophomore Alec Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) suffered the loss (2-1) as he allowed zero earned runs on five hits and struck out four batters. Junior Matt Ferrara (East Taunton, Mass.) pitched the final three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three. Seven different student-athletes recorded a hit for the Black & Gold.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today was the 72nd all-time meeting between the two teams.
