Baseball Holds on for Sixth Straight Win

HOLYOKE, Mass. – Senior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) went 3-for-5 with three RBI and classmate A. T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I) drove in four runs with a pair of doubles as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team ran its win streak to six games with a 15-11 win over Elms in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.

With the win the Leopards improve to 9-2 while the Blazers fall to 8-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Elms scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, thanks in part to a Wentworth error as well as a fielder's choice.
  • The top of the third inning saw freshman Christian Roncal (Glendale, Ariz.) lead off with a walk and go to second when sophomore Mike Siebert (Lexington, Mass.) walked. After Roncal was thrown out trying to steal third, Sibert took second. Junior Devon Lapierre (Dover, N.H.) walked, putting runners on first and second. Freshman Bennett Leary (Alamo, Calif.) singled to score Siebert, Peruzzi singled in Lapierre, and DiPina had a two-run double to score both Leary and Peruzzi and give the Black & Gold a 4-2 lead.
  • The Blazers scored a single run in the third on an RBI double and tied the game in the fourth on an error. However, the Black & Gold broke the tie with an 11-run fifth inning. Peruzzi hit a two-run single, DiPina notched his second two-run double of the contest, sophomore Matt Robinson (Mystic, Conn.) drew a bases-loaded walk, senior Michael Petit (Sandwich, Mass.) scored on a balk, Roncal had a two-run single, Siebert hit an RBI triple, Lapierre drove in a run with double, and Leary drove in a run with a fielder's choice.
  • Elms closed the gap with a six-run seventh inning, which included three straight bases loaded walks to go along with a pair of Wentworth errors and a fielder's choice. After the fourth run in the inning came across, graduate student Jon Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.) was brought in in relief, recording two of his three outs by way of the strikeout.
  • Campbell set down the side in order in the eighth, and, after Elms loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, he induced a ground out to end the game.
  • Junior Matt Ferrara (East Taunton, Mass.) improved to 1-1 on the year, allowing seven runs (two earned) on six hits and striking out four. Campbell recorded his first save of the season, allowing one hit and striking out six in three innings of work. In addition to Peruzzi and DiPina combining for five hits and seven RBI, Lapierre had a pair of hits while Leary and Roncal each drove in two runs.
