Baseball Reaches 20-Win Mark with Triumph of St. Joseph's

STANDISH, Maine – Senior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with two RBI, freshman Christian Roncal (Glendale, Ariz.) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and freshman Jacob DeCoste (Medfield, Mass.) pitched six shutout innings to improve to 3-0 as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team defeated St. Joseph's (Maine), 7-3, in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.

With the win the Leopard improve to 20-9 on the season, marking the first time since the 2011 season the Black & Gold have eclipsed the 20-win mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a scoreless first three innings, Wentworth jumped on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, aided by the first three batters reaching base. Sophomore Matt Robinson (Mystic, Conn.) led off with a walk, followed by back-to-back singles from sophomore Mike Sibert (Lexington, Mass.) and junior Devon Lapierre (Dover, N.H.). Roncal hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Robinson while a single from Peruzzi drove in Sibert.
  • The fifth inning saw the Leopards add two more runs as Lapierre led off with a walk and Roncal hit a single to move Lapierre to second. With one out, senior A. T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.) singled to load the bases and sophomore Matthew Favazzo (Billerica, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice, plating Lapierre. With two outs, junior Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.) reached on an error which scored Roncal.
  • Wentworth made it 5-0 in the seventh as DiPina led off with a walk and stole second. Favazzo followed with a walk and both runners stole, placing runners on second and third. Prisco drove in a run with a ground out, which scored DiPina.
  • St. Joseph's, which stranded runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, got on the board in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single with one out and a sacrifice fly, however, freshman Chase Carder (Gorham, N.H.) stranded runners at second and third.
  • With two outs in the eighth, Roncal singled and stole second. Peruzzi followed with an RBI single, making it 6-2. DiPina struck out, however, reached first on a passed ball, and stole second. Favazzo walked and Peruzzi scored on a wild pitch, upping the lead to 7-2. The Leopards loaded the bases, however, were unable to add to their lead.
  • The Monks made it a 7-3 game in the home half of the eighth, scoring on an RBI double with one out. The hosts had runners at first and third with two outs but junior Brady Aubuchon (Westminster, Mass.) got a strikeout to end the inning. With one out in the ninth, the hosts got a single and the runner moved to second on a passed ball. Graduate student Jon Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.), who came on to pitch the ninth inning, got the final two outs..

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today was the third all-time meeting between the two teams. Wentworth leads, 3-0.
