Baseball Falls in Crosstown Twinbill

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team dropped a pair of games to Suffolk. The Rams took the first game, 12-2 (seven innings) and the nightcap, 7-3.

GAME ONE:  Suffolk 12, Wentworth 2 (7)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Suffolk scored three times in the first inning, using a two-run home run and an RBI single. The Rams tacked on four in the bottom of the second, thanks to an RBI single and two doubles that drove in three runs. An RBI single in the third put the hosts ahead, 8-0.
  • Wentworth got on the board in the top of the fourth as sophomore Matthew Favazzo (Lexington, Mass.) singled, and, with two outs, freshman Bennett Leary (Alamo, Calif.) singled to move Favazzo to second. Sophomore Matt Robinson (Mystic, Conn.) singled in Favazzo. Two innings later, senior A. T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.) and Favazzo had back-to-back singles, with the latter putting the former on third. Favazzo was thrown out trying to steal second and DiPina came in to score.
  • An RBI single and a two-run double in the sixth inning and a solo home run in the seventh gave Suffolk the 10-run cushion.
  • Junior Matt Ferrara (East Taunton, Mass.) took the loss (1-2). Offensively, Favazzo had two hits.

GAME TWO:  Suffolk 7, Wentworth 3

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Suffolk picked up where it left off, scoring three times in the first inning, thanks to an RBI double, and RBI single, and a fielder's choice.
  • Wentworth pulled to within a pair at 3-1, thanks to a sacrifice fly from senior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.). Sophomore Nick Cullinan (Sandy Hook, Conn.) led off with a single and went to second on a junior Devon Lapierre (Dover, N.H.) single. Freshman Christian Roncal (Glendale, Ariz.) walked to load the bases before Peruzzi drove in Cullinan. The rams got a run back to make it 4-1 in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single.
  • The Leopards pulled within a run (4-3) in the top of the fourth inning, thanks to an RBI double from Cullinan and a wild pitch. Junior Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.) led off with a walk and, with one out, Robinson moved Prisco to second with a single. Cullinan followed with his RBI double, scoring Prisco, while Robinson scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Black & Gold had the tying run on third in the seventh, however, were unable to get him home. In the eighth inning, the hosts added three to their side on a two-run double and an RBI single.
  • Down to its final at bat, Wentworth put runners on first and second with two out as Robinson and Roncal each had hits, however, a fly out ended the game.
  • Senior Brodi Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) took the loss (3-2). At the plate Lapierre, Robinson, and Cullinan each had two hits.
