Strong Second Half Pushes Men's Lacrosse Past Mass. Maritime

BOSTON, Mass. – Offensively, junior Alec Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) scored three goals and added five assists and senior Ryan Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) tallied five goals and an assist while defensively Wentworth held Mass. Maritime scoreless over the final 19:18 as the Leopards defeated the Buccaneers, 13-9 in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Sweeney Field.

With the win Wentworth improves to 3-1 overall while Mass. Maritime falls to 4-2 on the season after suffering its second straight setback.

The Buccaneers got a pair of goals 4:30 apart in the first quarter to take a 2-0 lead as juniors Anthony Kurylak (Exeter, N.H.) and Sean Staples (Norwell, Mass.) scored. Senior Michael Cushera (Waltham, Mass.) cut the lead in half with a goal with 5:56 left before the visitors scored the next two off the sticks of sophomore Steven Anderson (Crownsville, Md.) and junior Reed McLean (Wilbraham, Mass.). Paradis would set up Coakley with 2:12 left to make it 4-2 after the first 15:00.

Coakley fed Paradis early in the second quarter to make it a 4-3 game before the Buccaneers used a 3-0 spurt with two goals from Kurylak and a single marker from sophomore Ryan McNeill (Burlington, Mass.) to make it 7-3 with 9:12 left in the half. Junior Nick Parent (Windham, N.H.) had a pair of goals sandwiched around a Coakley tally to make it 7-6 at the half.

Paradis tied the game with 12:25 left in the third quarter and Coakley gave the Black & Gold their first lead just 17 seconds later. Sophomore Joseph Landy (Chatham, N.J.) knotted the game at 8-all before Cushera scored with 5:55 to play in the third, making it a 9-8 contest. The Buccaneers would tie the game with 4:18 left on a Stapled goal, however Paradis gave Wentworth the lead for good with his third of the game 1:41 later.

Two goals from Coakley and one from sophomore Mike Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) were the only tallies of the fourth quarter as the Leopards claimed their home opener.

In addition to Paradis (who also had seven ground balls) and Ryan Coakley, Cushera had a pair of goals and Parent had a goal and an assist. Junior Tim Parlato (Needham, Mass.) scooped up 11 ground balls and sophomore Ty Trebbe (Wilbraham, Mass.) won 18-of-26 at the X while recording six ground balls. Freshman Jake Ollila (Goffstown, N.H.) had four caused turnovers.

Kurylak scored three goals while Staples (two goals, one assist) and McNeill (one goal, one assist) also recording multiple points for Mass. Maritime. McLean scooped up seven ground balls and was 4-of-6 at the X.

Freshman Adam Dufault (Lexington, Mass.) made 12 saves for Wentworth while junior James Klose (Ellicott City, Md.) made 15 saves for the Buccaneers. Wentworth had a 53-36 shot advantage and a 50-47 edge in ground balls.

The Leopards open Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday at home against Gordon. Mass. Maritime is also in action on Saturday, traveling to Anna Maria.
