Men's Soccer Edged by Johnson & Wales

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Xavier Carty (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) and junior O'Kyle Corridon (Selden, N.Y.) each scored goals as the Johnson & Wales men's soccer team fended off Wentworth Institute of Technology, 2-1, in non-conference action at Sweeney Field.

The Wildcats carried play at the beginning of the game, earning a pair of corner kicks within 33 seconds of each other. Shortly after the second one, junior Kyle Metz (St. James, N.Y.) took a shot which was blocked by a Leopard defender. Metz controlled the rebound but sent his second shot attempt wide.

In the middle stages of the half Wentworth gained momentum, earning a pair of corner kicks and taking three shot attempts, but couldn't put any on net.

With time winding down in the half, freshman Brandon Davidson (Allen, Texas) broke through the midfield and sent a pass to Carty, whose shot to the left side alluded Leopard freshman netminder Chase Richard (Smithfield, R.I.) with just one second left in the stanza. Despite holding an 8-4 shot advantage, the Leopards trailed, 1-0 at the break.

Just 1:25 into the second half Wentworth had a golden opportunity when junior Adam Rhodes (Litchfield, Conn.) rifled a shot from just outside the box that rattled off the crossbar.

At 53:32, the Wildcats increased their lead to 2-0 when freshman Scott Lopez (Pequannock, N.J.) fed Corridon, whose shot beat Richard to the right side.

Wentworth continued to apply pressure and at the 62:26 mark finally broke the ice when sophomore Arberi Ferraj (Moosup, Conn.) buried a one-time to the upper left corner, off a feed from Rhodes.

Both teams had chances over the final 27 minutes but neither could find the back of the net.

Junior Ryan Dzierawski (Oakland, Mich.) made four saves for Johnson & Wales while Richard, in his first collegiate start, turned aside three shots. The hosts held a 16-9 shot advantage with the Wildcats holding a 4-3 corner kick advantage.

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 2-0 and hosts Salve Regina. That same day Wentworth (0-2) travels to MIT.
